I was in 5th grade I think. All the class rooms at my school had a TV on watching live, which seems strange now that I think about it. I remember the teacher crying quite a bit.

I was working at a golf course in Connecticut and we had a tournament and I got out early. I love watching the shuttle take off so I raced home and watched the countdown and liftoff. I couldn't believe my eyes when it blew up. I was shocked.
Reagan's speech after was one of the greatest speeches ever given. |

I was working at a body shop restoring Porsches and Corvettes....Had a little TV on a shelf that the whole shop gathered around in stunned disbelief.

never forget that day...was in the cafeteria at St John's hanging with some people when a girl we knew said "I just spoke with my dad- the space shuttle exploded"...every went to the SUB to watch it- stood there with SJU RB Dennis Bligen, who played with the Jets a year later and watched it...
this video is just half of it- there are some terrible videos which shows Christa McCauliff's parents in the viewing area at NASA watching the launch as the shuttle exploded- they quickly whisk them away...I believe kids from McCauliffe's school were also in the viewing area- you can hear audible gasps and screams from the people when they realized what had happened... |

It may be because I was 9 when he took office and 17 when he left it, but to me, Reagan was the president.
This was America, and he was the Captain. He was in charge and when he'd go on and give these speeches, you just felt better. |

I was with my family on a ski trip that week in Killington, VT. My brothers and I had just come off the slopes and into one of the lodges to get some beers, and a guy we didn't even know is telling us and anyone who would listen that the shuttle had blown up. At first we thought he was some nut.
We spent the rest of the day and that night watching t.v. coverage of the whole sorry affair. |
