Whose line is it anyway? It's L.T.'s now

I thought this was interesting and perhaps telling...

Whose line is it anyway? It's L.T.'s now

March, 15, 2010
By Tim Graham

When comparing last year's numbers for LaDainian Tomlinson and Thomas Jones, there's no contest.

Jones was almost twice the back as Tomlinson statistically. Jones logged career highs, Tomlinson career lows.

Fewest Yards/Rush vs. 8+ in Box (2009)

Player, Team Yards/Rush

LaDainian Tomlinson, SD, 1.9
Mike Bell, NO, 2.5
Knowshon Moreno, DEN, 2.7
Jamal Lewis, CLE, 2.8
Brandon Jacobs, NYG, 2.8
Minimum 50 Rushes

ESPN Stats & Information found Tomlinson averaged 1.9 yards per carry against eight defenders in the box, the NFL's worst average -- by more than half a yard -- among all backs with at least 50 carries. The former San Diego Chargers star also struggled between the tackles compared to Jones, as the accompanying chart shows.

Sure, Jones is 10 months older. But Tomlinson has 3,410 career touches. Jones has 2,586 and is coming off the most productive season of his life.

But rather than examine the stat lines or lines around their eyes, perhaps we should consider the offensive lines.

Football Outsiders ranks O-lines based on adjusted line yards, a formula that assigns responsibility for a running back's gains and losses and adjusts them based on down, distance, other situations and opponents. It's a complicated, but accepted method.

The Jets had three Pro Bowlers on their offensive line. All five of them started all 19 of their regular-season and playoff games. They ranked ninth in adjusted line yards at 4.28 a carry.

Tomlinson vs. Jones

A look at the newest Jets' running back and the former Jets' running back when running between the tackles.

Tomlinson Jones

Rushes 184 293
Yards 584 1294
Yards/Rush 3.2 4.4

The Chargers lacked continuity. Only two of their linemen -- Pro Bowl left guard Kris Dielman and left tackle Marcus McNeill -- started every game. They fielded five different combinations. And the Chargers ranked 18th in adjusted line yards at 4.02 yards a carry.

Football Outsiders also calculates a stat it calls "power success," an evaluation of an O-line's efficiency at converting runs on third and fourth down and goal-line runs with 2 or fewer yards to go.

New York converted 70 percent of those runs, ranking sixth in the NFL.

San Diego converted 46 percent -- dead last.

Shonn Greene will be the Jets' featured back anyway, but based on those numbers, maybe Tomlinson's change of scenery (i.e. the five big fellas he's sees lined up across him before each snap) will boost his production enough to justify the Jets' decision to bring him aboard.

like missing a disease when it's cured

Cro and Pool for Lito and Sherry -- DB group holes filled , maybe the best in the NFL

LT for TTY - RB group hole filled - the best in the NFL if Leon comes back healthy

three holes FILLED and the draft is still five weeks away

it is an analogy

when you get rid of a weakness and feel stronger, you don't miss the weakness

Jones with his 2 yard carries 90 percent of the time, his instinct for running into the pile, his molasses-like first move to the hole, his non-elusiveness, his inability to go outside and his inability to catch a pass was a weakness that the Jets have fixed and thus they are stronger for it

Tomlinson sucks at this point in his career. Lets just hop e they dont feel the need to start him and give him carries just because he is who he is.

Why do I have the feeling he will be our starter?

Why do I have the feeling you are wrong, twice. About Greene not starting and about LT not being better than Thomas Two Yards

there is no way that Thomas Two Yards would have been better than Thomas Two Yards was last season.

He was going to be a backup to Shonn Greene. He wanted to be paid 7 million dollars to get his 150 carries for 300 yards as a backup and catch 3 passes. Instead we got a more versatile running back as a backup who can catch passes for 5 million for TWO years.

There is no way that Thomas Jones is, was, or ever will be a better running back than LT

lol well duh! Yes we all know TJ had 1400 yards. Awesome. That's over with now. They are now both backup's. And LT is the better back up for the Jets. The End.

Bingo!! Winner, Winner!!!

TJ would hardly be used and would avg 3yds per carry if he was lucky, Norv and the chargers are a passing team. TJ would love the weather hate the play calling.

I sure hope everyone is right and LT plays more like the old LT than the LT of last season. He is definitely running behind a better line now and our philosophy is to run the hell out of the football so he is definitely in the right system. I think LT is going to be used more than most people think; being able to catch out of the backfield and lineup as a receiver LT brings a dimension to the offense that we were sorely lacking last season (especially after Leon went down with the injury). Sanchez needed a checkdown last year like it was nobody's business and I definitely think this will help in his development (he won't need to keep trying to force the ball down the field for all of those INT's).

Tanny, Rex & Callahan obviously thought Jones was a product of the Oline otherwise:

1) They wouldn't have demoted him during the end of the season & playoffs, and

2) They wouldn't have cut him and refused to sign him at backup money.

So people can disagree with that all they want, but that was the reason. Only now are people like Tim Graham understanding it. Oline is a huge variable in this equation that countless people are overlooing when they invoke TJ's and LT's respective 2009 stat lines.

As a Jets backup in 2010, would TJ get 1,400 yds?

Also, it's a bit ironic that of TJ, Smith, Greene, Leon & Woodhead it was TJ who had the worse YPC at 4.2.

Leon & Greene combined for 871 yds last season on 180 carries. At TJ's average that would be 756 yds.

... exactly ...

... our bigshots who have made smart enough decisions to put us in the afc championship game last season have decided ...

... for our BACKUP running back ...

... to go with the played excellent in a similar system to ours, unknown the impact that our strong OL will have on him, excellent receiving 3rd down rb, declining superstar ...

... over ...

... the faded down the stretch, known quantity in our system, most carries and yards in his career - likely impacted by the strength our our OL, not a strong receiving 3rd down rb, very good player ...

good decision by me
