we need a slot WR, so... Jordan Shipley??

admittedly, i'm no draft expert, but this guy sounds like exactly what we're looking for:
Scout's Inc.

Production 1 "2004: Redshirted2005: NCAA awards Shipley a medical redshirt2006: (13/1) 16 rec., 229 yards (14.3 avg.), 4 TD2007: (13/7) 27 rec., 417 yards (15.4 avg.), 5 TD2008: (13/13) 89 rec., 1,060 yards (11.9 avg.), 11 TD; 15 KOR, 394 yards (26.3 avg.), 1 TD; 6 PR, 64 yards (10.7 avg.), 1 TD"

Height-Weight-Speed 3 Possesses an adequate combination of height and weight. Top-end speed appears to be above-average. He needs to verify his estimated speed in order to improve his draft value as a potential return specialist in the NFL.

Durability 4 "Missed the entire 2005 season with a hamstring injury and missed the first two games of the 2007 season with a hamstring injury in the opposite leg. Applied for and NCAA awarded a sixth year of eligibility in 2009. He also missed 2009 spring with a shoulder injury that required surgery. To his credit, though, Shipley has played in all 13 games each of the past three seasons (2006-08), including 21 total starts and significant touches in the return game as a junior."

Intangibles 2 Versatile athlete. Team player. Battled back from early injuries and has shown a good work ethic throughout.
Wide Receiver specific Traits

Separation Skills 2 "He's a sudden athlete. Shows good burst off the line of scrimmage. Knows how to set up DBs with double moves. Very subtle, crafty route-runner. Displays a very good feel for finding soft spots in zone. Will work back to his QB and understands the importance of sight lines. Doesn't have a lot of experience running intermediate-to-vertical routes. Has room to improve in that area of the route tree."

Ball Skills 1 Ranks among the nation's best in this department. His focus is excellent. He really looks the ball in and makes the tough catches in traffic. He can pluck on the run and consistently catches the ball thrown over his head.

Vertical Speed 3 Does not run many vertical routes. Has room to improve in this area. Top-end speed is good but not elite. He flashes a second gear and the ability to get over the top of man-to-man coverage. Not a huge threat on fade routes/jump balls.

Run After Catch 2 "Much more experienced operating after the catch (and in return game) than he is running vertical routes. Gets upfield quickly. Shows good vision to hit the cutback crease. Protects the ball well. Has some shiftiness to make the first defender miss and displays a second gear to run away from some defenders if he hits a crease. However, is not the type of elusive runner that will wiggle his way through multiple defenders in space."

Competitiveness/Toughness 2 "Shows no fear going over the middle. Does not get 'alligator arms'. Secures the ball, takes the hit and pops right up. Solid effort as a blocker. Uses feet and leverage to get into position. Gives a decent effort to sustain. Not overly powerful at the point of attack and falls off some blocks, though. "
what do you guys think of him? how high is he expected to go? worthy of our late 2nd-rounder?

I'd love to add Shipley.

I personally wouldn't mind taking the guy in the late 2nd, despite some saying that would be a reach.

He doesn't have blazing speed and his upside is limited, but he just screams perfect slot receiver at the next level.

I like Shipley but not in the 2nd. In the 4th if he drops there. He has limitations. There are better options in the 2nd round on receivers with more upside. I am thinking he goes in the 3rd, possibly 4th.

I like shipley but he probably ends up a 4th round pick like Collie.

my thinking is that if the jets take a wr in round 1 or 2, the guy is expected to be more than just a slot wr/kr. a damien williams or tate, for example, would be considered a playmaker with the potential to replace a cotch, rather than a #3 with additional value on ST. if they took a wr in the 4th like shipley that would be great value for the pick.

of course if they took a guy like mccourty they get the kr as well as a cb and that has great appeal.

Shipley is a very good player. Tough and courageous. Seems to always get the job done even under negative circumstances. He may still be available in the fourth. He fits the Jets need for a slot. I would prefer Jacoby Ford or Andre Roberts based on speed but this guy is just fine.
Many peoploe want to draft a WR in the first or get a guy like Marshall. No need. And talk of moving Cotchery to the slot. Why? So he has to adjust and learn something new, rather than build on his experience with Sanchez. The slot guy will be on the field 35-40% of the time. Ideal for one of the above guys taken in the third or fourth.

I like Shipley, but even in the late 2nd we are reaching. Too many good players to reach in the 2nd round. My personal opinion is that Shipley goes in the 3rd, he certainly goes before we pick in the 4th. However, if he falls to us in the 4th, take him. I just don't think he will be there

I love Roberts for the slot even more so than Ford. Roberts hands are vastly superior to Ford. Ford times well but it does not show up on tape the way you think it would. Roberts to me is the ideal slot receiver in this draft for the Jets. However I see him going in the 3rd round so we would need to trade up or down to grab him.

Wouldn't mind Shipley, but not until the 4th round. He has no place being selected in the top 64.

I think Roberts may have better hands. Ford is faster and is a good kick returner as well, depending on where the Jets are going with that responsibility. The reason why Roberts may be available in the fourth (my first choice of the three) is the level of competition he faced.

+1, the Jets have to address a specific need at some point in this draft and that is SLOT receiver. We had the #1 rushing attack and our offense was still ranked 20th in overall offense, the switch from TJ to LT isn't going to bring that into the top 10. The passing game needs improvement. We already used draft picks to get an elite tall, deep threat in Braylon. We need a guy who is more quick than fast, runs crisp routes, gets YAC and has limited character issues. A true slot receiver will fit into our WR corps and will allow Chez to flourish even more, this upgrades your previous high investment (5th overall).

In the first round its almost a sure bet we are going defense, whether its on the line, OLB or safety. In the second round, I want the Jets (with a late round pick) to lock up Shipley and cross this need off the list for a long time. If hes on the board at 61, he should be a Jet. If you want a comparison, look at Austin Collie, basically the same height and weight as Shipley. As a rookie, Peyton aside, he stepped in and produced immediately (60 receptions, 7 TDs, 2 post-season TDs). Shipley won't have to battle anyone for playing time, he will step into training camp with a better skill set for the SLOT than anyone else on the roster. The prospect analysis above can give you the detailed breakdown of his skill-set, but this guy is an unbelievable athlete who will make this offense better. [I]**Remember, Rex likes guys who can find it and get it....[Ball Skills 1 Ranks among the nation's best in this department. His focus is excellent. Beyond that, he's one of the best punt returners coming out of college and we have a NEED there too. Jimmy Bones is the man but the guy doesn't need to be back there returning kicks after a series on defense.

Was Shonn Greene a reach??

A lot of Mocks still have the Jets snatching up Tate at 29. I agree that we definitely need a slot WR so we will see what happens.

Everything you say in analysis is absolutely correct. I have no fault with picking Shipley and he is ideal for the slot.
BUT, I think he ( or one of the others mentioned) is there in the 4th.
The Jets do have a need at DE & OLB and I think rounds 1 & 2 should deal with that. If the Jets are uncomfortable with a good slot not being available in the 4th, trade down out of #29 - 10 spots or so and add a third rounder if possible. Shipley or another will be there in the top 74.
The need for a S is not a high priority and a reserve can be had in the 5th or 6th. Same with CB.
I would not kill myself if the Jets went DE and this guy in 1 & 2 however. It's better to reach and fill a need than not fill a need.

I like Gilyard, but also don't think he should be our pick in round 2.

Taking a WR in the top 2 rounds should be more about upside the ability to be a #1 or #2 in the future, it's a waste of a pick IMO to take a strictly slot WR there.

i agree. even a guy like santana moss was more than merely a slot wr.

Same thing with Tate.

Some people keep calling him a slot WR, but he is more of a bulked up DeSean Jackson/Steve Smith than he is Wes Welker. Tate can really go up and get it and plays as a deep threat more than he does finding holes underneath.
