Basically, from this deal (according to Pat Kirwan of Sirius NFL Radio) depending on what the Seahawks do with their 2nd RD pick (swapped positions with San Diego) the deal could actually result in the acquisition of Whitehurst for only a 3rd RD pick in 2011. It's rumored that Seattle will look into acquiring a RFA RB with a 2nd RD tender assigned to them, but believe that their original 2nd RD selection was too high to trade for that RB. Basically swapping positions in the 2nd RD of the 2010 Draft got them a QB and possibly more! Time will tell......

Can you think of any RBs that have a 2nd round tender? I know of one... |

... was listening to the kirwan talking about this on sirius yesterday ...
... he stated $$$ paid was definitely too high ... ... there was some connection to one of the front office guys pushing hard for whitehurst ... forget if it was the new hc or someone else ... ... he said the skillset coming out of college was very solid in his measurables for an nfl style system ... ... pat not sold on clausen but would rank whitehurst at this point after learning on bench for a couple years as 3rd best qb coming out behind sam bradford & colt mccoy ... ... says the shift down in the 2nd round as part of the deal is a tell to him that seattle plans to sign a RFA with a 2nd round tender ... explained there is nothing to impact seattle whether it's a high 2nd rounder or a low 2nd rounder that they give team for RFA ... and put a poison pill in the contract to not allow the team with the RFA to match ... didn't sound like leon washington was the target ... think it was a couple of defensive guys he thought was who he expected them to go after ... ... so in essence once all is said & done they will have gotten him for a 2011 3rd ... which equals a 2010 4th ... ... they also interviewed shawn phillips and asked him about whitehurst ... he didn't have much insight into what whitehurst will be able to do ... apparently he wasn't even doing much throwing on scout teams during the season either ... ... a head scratcher certainly ... but if they do the RFA move it will not be as absurd as it initially sounds ... l_j_r Last edited by ljr@work; 03-19-2010 at 09:07 AM. |

2 years, 10 million. Not exactly chump change.
Hopefully Carroll knows what he's doing. |

well Pete determined that Mark Sanchez "wasn't ready" so this Whitehurst guy must be super ready
... pat not sold on clausen but would rank whitehurst at this point after learning on bench for a couple years as 3rd best qb coming out behind sam bradford & colt mccoy ...
I don't buy this line of reasoning because Whitehurst is going to be 28 when the season starts. Thats fine for a QB in his prime not for one who hasn't seem game action in 3 years and will undoubtedly need to be developed.
Agree with you totally.....and its probably the reason Pete Carroll shouldnt be anywhere near a GM job. 20 spots in a loaded 2nd round is ridiculous.
I dont mind attempting to sign/acquire a young player....but why the need for such a big contract? I know the QBs this offseason are being paid ridiculously high (see delhomme 7million) but this is someone who couldnt rise to 2nd string on his old team. If he was so valuable, wouldnt SD let Volek go and pay whitehurst regular backup money? Plus...what are they using as a basis for evaluation? He barely has any preseaon snaps under his belt, and zero regular season snaps.
if you've read the board here long enough, you'd understand that he cannot be a 2nd stringer because he has zero in game experience. automatic disqualification. :D |

But the RFA Rules don't work that way. In order to sign a RFA, the signing team has to already have their original draft pick OR HIGHER. In other words, Seattle can't sign a RFA with a 2nd round tender unless they have their own 2nd rounder or better. The Chargers, however, can sign a RFA with a 2nd round tender using Seattle's pick. |
... you sure about this? the sirius guys were stating this not to be the case ... ... pat kirwan said there was no difference for seattle if it was their original pick or one further down as long at it was still a 2nd rounder ... in regards to being able to sign a RFA ... l_j_r |

Even if it was a RFA Runningback with a 2nd round tender,
Pierre Thomas (2nd) Jerome Harrison (2nd) Jerious Norwood (2nd) LenDale White (2nd) (Don't count him out with the USC connection) Where would you rank Leon on that list, especially considering he's coming off an injury? Certaintly Pierre Thomas is ahead of him at least. |
Unless the NFL changed the rule, Pat Kirwin is dead wrong. The Redskins got screwed a couple of years ago on this. They signed a RFA with a 2nd round tender but the NFL rejected the offer sheet because they didn't have a 2nd rounder. So the Skins traded for a 2d rounder but the offer sheet was rejected again because the Skins new 2d rounder was lower than their original pick. Why do you think Seattle couldn't sign Marshall to an offer sheet? Seattle has 2 1st rounders (6th & 14th). Seattle wanted the Broncos to take the 14th, but the Broncos said "no" because they were entitled to the 6th overall under the Rules. So Seattle didn't sign Marshall to an offer sheet although they had flown him in for a visit and wined & dined him. Last edited by SMC; 03-19-2010 at 05:00 PM. |
