UT, I respect your opinion around here and am curious as to why you believe that Wr "is most definitely a position that needs to be addressed."

Here's my case why it isnt:

1) Braylon Edwards has shown major signs that he is a bonafide Pro Bowl Wr. In a season where he joined the team late, immediatly became a major threat on offense with a few drops in BIG situations. Ironically, he made much tougher catches over the middle in the clutch. I think with a whole season to prepare we see a more consitant Edwards. I do not buy into the media's point of view where this guy cant catch the football. I know Edwards has acted immature in the past but believe he has turned over a new leaf here under Rex. He is talented enough to give him a full season and thensome to become our main Wr.

2) Jerricho Cotchery is an above average #2 Wr. This guy has been nothing but clutch over the past three years. If Edwards goes down, I have no doubt Cotchery steps it up, he has proven it in the past and has no ego to get in his way.

3) Brad Smith emerged last season as a bonifide threat at the Wildcat position. Playing only QB in college, Smith was asked to change positions and has improved each year. This could be the year that it pays off at Wr. He has shown signs that he can play.

4) Marcus Henry has the size and speed. Has been developing for a few years now on the PS. We have to see what he can do or he is just taking up space.

5) Late round Wr. I have no problem addressing this position late in the draft. Just dont think it is a pressing need.
Because after Braylon and Cotch, we have nothing at receiver.

Smith is good for a gadget play here and there and is a solid return man, but he's never really refined his skills as a receiver and to be honest, I don't even think the Jets view him as a receiver anymore.

Clowney has never capitalized on his pre-season play. Marcus Henry has proven to be nothing more than TC fodder/PS material at this point.

I wouldn't really be in favor of drafting a WR in round 1, but I wouldn't be totally against it either. We seem to finally have our young, franchise QB. Might as well surround him with as many weapons as possible and set him up to be successful.

Ideally, I would want someone like Gilyard in round 2 or Shipley in the 4th.

Either way, I think we go with a receiver somewhere in the first 4 rounds.
here is what i love about Tannenbaum...they have a draft board...if they see someone they love slipping you better believe they are going to go get him. I see them maybe trading Leon for a third + (which they don't have) and then using that to move up for Mays or Bryant.
We shouldn't have to move up for either of them, and I don't like either of them where we sit now. Too flawed.
New York Jets likely to make a pre-draft splash with free agency or trade; plan to sign Neil Rackers

The Jets have gone three weeks since their last significant player move - the signing of LaDainian Tomlinson. In their world, that's an eternity, but it doesn't mean they're out of tricks.

They're not planning to go peacefully into the April 22 draft. League insiders believe ever-aggressive GM Mike Tannenbaum may have a surprise or two before the Jets shift into draft mode. Considering the timing - 10 days before the deadline for signing restricted free agents - it's possible the Jets are preparing to plunge into the RFA market.

That is sure to ratchet up the speculation regarding Brandon Marshall, but league sources continued to maintain yesterday that the Jets aren't interested in signing or trading for the Broncos wide receiver.

One move that could happen this week involves the kicking situation. Now that Jay Feely has signed with the Cardinals, the Jets are planning to visit with unrestricted free agent Neil Rackers, who spent the last seven seasons with the Cards.

Rackers, 33, is scheduled to arrive tonight and will meet tomorrow with Jets officials, sources confirmed. The Jets already have recently signed veteran Nick Folk on the roster - he signed Feb. 23, when talks with Feely hit an impasse - but Folk is coming off a bad year and they may want to add a more reliable kicker to compete with him.

Rackers is a 78% career field-goal kicker (not counting two big misses in last season's playoffs) and is widely regarded as the top kicker remaining on the market. The Ravens and Bengals also are believed to be interested.

By rule, the Jets now are eligible to sign an unrestricted free agent to replace Feely, but as a "Final Eight" team, they can't sign a player to a greater first-year salary than the one they lost. Based on Feely's contract, that means they have about $1.25 million to play with. It's not enough to make a huge splash, but it should be enough to secure Rackers or another kicker.

The Jets have needs at wide receiver, defensive line and quarterback (a veteran backup), so it's possible Tannenbaum is plotting a pre-draft move to plug one or more holes with a trade and/or free-agent signing. The team has acknowledged an interest in former Bengals and Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles, a free agent.

The Jets are also interested in locking up two of their young stars, cornerback Darrelle Revis and center Nick Mangold, to long-term deals.

The Jets own the 29th pick in the upcoming draft, but that doesn't mean they will pick in that spot.

Tannenbaum has traded up in two of the last three drafts to select Revis and quarterback Mark Sanchez, and he won't hesitate to move up for an elite player.

I don't think many of you guys have actually watched Dumervil. It's pretty entertaining at times how little he actually cares and does against the run. He can figure out a way to get a pass rush which is important, but lets not go saying that we'd give up a 1st and more for him.

by losing wallace wright, brad smith is now the 5th wr/special teams ace who happens to also be a good wildcat guy. he has a good role on offense, but a very small one as a wr. he's just not that good at it. that means clowney is the 4th wr with a gaping hole at the 3rd wr/slot guy. coles or a draft pick would suit this spot just fine. if drafted, i'd prefer it be the 2nd-4th round range as opposed to a first or late pick. i'm good with either option, but something does need to be done.

Edwards helped the team a lot last year being a deep threat. However if he continues to drop as many passes as he has in the past it is a very legit concern. If he has a bad year they may be looking to upgrade #1 WR. If he has a great year he might price himself out what the Jets figure he is worth.

2) Jerricho Cotchery is an above average #2 Wr. This guy has been nothing but clutch over the past three years. If Edwards goes down, I have no doubt Cotchery steps it up, he has proven it in the past and has no ego to get in his way.

Cotchery is money, no worries at all about him.

3) Brad Smith emerged last season as a bonifide threat at the Wildcat position. Playing only QB in college, Smith was asked to change positions and has improved each year. This could be the year that it pays off at Wr. He has shown signs that he can play.

Brad Smith has proved a few things the last few years.
- He can help out in the wildcat.
- He is an excellent ST player.
- He is totally NOT a viable WR.

4) Marcus Henry has the size and speed. Has been developing for a few years now on the PS. We have to see what he can do or he is just taking up space.

He has not been able to get any playing time despite us not always being strong at WR. I'd say after the 2 years or so we have had him the Jets know what they have.

5) Late round Wr. I have no problem addressing this position late in the draft. Just dont think it is a pressing need.

If Cotchery got hurt in the 1st game of the year we would have the worst WR core in the league probably. Edwards, Clowney....who?

Our passing offense 31st in the league, we went out and got a highly touted Qb, we watched as we lost the title game because Indys 3rd WR shredded us.

WR may not be well above some other positions but to me it is at least as much of a need as just about nay other position we are drafting for.

You make some excellent points as usual Beer.

1) I think Edwards drops have been magnified because they came on potential HUGE plays. His big catch in the AFC Championship game (I am hoping) was the "monkey off his back." Your insight on his big year potential as it relates to the money he would be asking in the future is valid.

2) Cotch is money..........

3) I have not lost hope with Brad Smith as a Wr as of yet. It is a difficult position to learn after all thoseyears at QB. He is with the JETS for "the long run" and it might be in the teams best interest to put him in more positions to succeed as a Wr. He made HUGE strides last season. I'd give him the opportunity.

4) If the JETS "know what they have" in Marcus Henry and they are not impressed then shame on them for not releasing him and signing another Wr. We can only believe that they do see something in him because Henry remains with the team (I believe he was resigned). At some point we have to see what we have in him.

5) I am not against taking a Wr. I just dont see it in the first round because Edwards has the potential to be elite and Cotchery is so steady. Are we really in a position to pay a first round pick at Wr to get such limited time?

Great response UT.

Definitly got me thinking.

Makes sense to at least entertain the idea of drafting another Wr for Sanchez along with bringing in Edwards last season.

I can accept a Wr round 2 -4 with this thinking.

Draft will be interesting as always

Good stuff........................

LOL....normally I find myself defending Cimini from some pretty over the top criticism on this site, but I think its pretty much dead on right here. Its clear that he had absolutely nothing to write about and just printed nothing. If someone started a thread with Cimini's exact piece, they'd get flamed mercilessly.

+1 ... Edwards is totally unreliable... if you look up the phrase butter-fingers in the dictionary, you will find a picture of him. Our other receivers are below average as you mentioned. I would say WR is our weakest position by far, followed by DE & Safety. If we can get Shipley in the 4th, we should be all over that.
