But hindsight is 20/20 and who's to say that New York would have taken the top prize in the Lottery if it held on to the pick after nothing in 2009 seem to go according to plan. New York's last-place finish in '09 can be deceiving. This Liberty team, which lost a tightly-contested Eastern Conference Finals in 2008, was still a talented one, but without an identity, which was likely the result switching coaches and systems midseason and not having a superstar. That last one has since changed. New York made a splash just prior to the draft by acquiring Cappie Pondexter, who played her college ball at nearby Rutgers and has been a star in the WNBA since joining the league in 2006. New York also received a second-round selection in this draft (No. 16) out of the three-team deal with Chicago and Phoenix, and when you package that with their No. 13 pick the Liberty should be able to get some value on April 8. Anne Donovan, in her first full season as head coach, would probably love to come away with a rebounder now that New York has acquired the playmaker it desperately needed. Actually, any frontcourt depth would be helpful since the team has seen both Shameka Christon and Cathrine Kraayeveld depart.
