What DE in this draft would start over Mike Devito this year?

I'm curious what people think. I don't think there are any DE that would start or make that much an impact in their rookie year

In this defense.

In fact I think only several players at 3 positions would get any significant playing time. Those positions IMO are the sub packages, NB in the nickel and Pass Rush Specialist on explicit passing downs.

You may be able to get a guy like Taylor in there, but how much is going to play over Poole?

Odrick & Joseph would be my answer (available at 29 that is).

Taylor scares me. He's a Tampa 2, 4-3 OLB masquerading as a Safety.

Also depends on what happens w/ taylor, but we should still draft there for age

Part of the point is that who plays the 5 tech that will go b4 odrick? No one.

Unless u say Suh and then iwe can all laff.

I really don't think that - aside from the learning curve jumping from college to pro - odrick is stout enough, uses leverage well enough ( he gets too straight up too often), or is consistent enough to warrant a challenge to Devito, whom the ;ets just gave a new contract to.

Considering Pool's injury history... Taylor Mays (or any safety on rd 1/2) would get a ton of snaps in Rex's D. Especially when they flex 46

I don't think any of us hate DeVito, a lot of us just don't want him starting.

I see DeVito for what he is, a solid rotational player who adds to the depth of the DL.

He's the kind of guy where as long as he's a starter, you're looking to upgrade the position.

actually that's a really good call.. .he has real pro strength and is a great 5-tech prospect. I take it back... Suh would start... Carrington would play alot... and rotate with Devito. But only Suh likely starts over him.

So i think the points are made:

1a) there are really only a handful of players that are not only NEW to the system, but ROOKIES as well, who are going to get significant reps in this year's defense, which means that they'd be taking snaps and playing time away from starters. Those players in my mind that could start or get significant reps AND are available at 29 would be at

definitely: (certain sub packages) pass rush OLB, nickelback, Plank's Safety in the 46
getting some reps in a rotation: maybe some DL, although we already have nice backups in a rotation with Pouha and Devito; Base package Safety

1b) what that implies is that we are really in a position to draft for mostly depth, for 2011 and betond, (which has not been the case in forever), even in the first frame, and that is a really big deal with ol warhorses like Ellis and Jenkins and 3 of 5 OL, our #2 RB and an ILB getting old. we have to think for the future; the franchise could really be turning a corner, and has to think in terms of sustainability. In the past, we have usually expected like most other teams, our draft picks to come in and start or contribute right away: Sanchez, Gholston, Revis, Keller, Brick, Mangold, Nugent, Vilma, Robertson, Moss, Ellis, Abraham, Becht. The couple of exceptions were Bryan Thomas and Pennington (who was the only one of four first rounders that year, but would later define an era of Jets football).

2) Mike DeVito is a really solid young player who just got a major new contract from the Jets and who is only getting better. If you draft a DE like Odrick or Carrington, it is more likely they are being drafted to replace Shaun Ellis, that old battleship, when he is finally decommissioned.

Joseph, Odrick, Carrington, Alualu, etc, these guys will have a real hard time breaking the lineup in 2010 even if Marques Douglass isn't resigned.

A lot of people are clamoring for impact players in rd 1. Who are these players?

I think they are a NB, Mccourty; an OLB, like Hughes, Sapp, Griffin; or a safety like Taylor, Nate, Burnett, etc - and the only safety you'd take at 1.29 is Taylor, who can't cover...

Either way they'd be rotating with DeVito heavily...but guys who can take the starting job from him earlier than others:

Suh
Cody
Odrick
Carrington
Williams (Dan)
Joseph

We're looking for a run stuffer in that spot, so it's pretty much those guys. I like guys like Oghobaase, maybe Al Woods, Jay Ross, Mike Neal, and Corey Peters are also nice late/mid round options. DeVito went from unheralded stud to "OK, we get it, he's good and he wasn't drafted!"...he's our equivalent of Chris Hoke/Mike Wright/Justin Bannan/Dwan Edwards...not a guy who's cut out to be a starter, but a top 4th man in the DL rotation.

Also, a good 3-4 DL can start early..."tie up blockers"...#1 job....the guys I named after the guys I really like are there because they showed an ability to command blockers. Learn to pass rush from Ellis and Jenkins, but we're not leaning on them to aid our pass rush by him getting sacks. His job is to open it up for the OLBs. Also...this is the trenches...you learn to fight in the trenches by fighting in the trenches...it's not like the 3-4 OLB transition where it goes from trenches to 2nd level or...iunno that'd be the cavalry, right? Gotta learn to ride the horse there...Not so much here.

6'4"
295 lbs (now 305)

1.62 10 yd
31 reps on bench
33" vert

7.50 shuttle

just on those numbers where does this guy stack versus other numbers in a draft like this - not including anything else like motor, football IQ, short space agility, heart.

Dwan Edwards is a pretty good athlete himself....still not someone a top D just hands their vacant starting spot to.

I was probably one of the 2-3 biggest DeVito fans on this board going back to '07...Still am...but I am not all that comfortable with the idea that the best competition he has for the starting job is Pito. This DL needs more talent, sooner rather than later. You don't really want to mess with depleting your front lines...as worthy a job the non-Jenkins/Ellis crowd did last year....last year is last year.

oh i know -- in fact i am all FOR drafting a 5 tech early. i am just combating expectations.

IMO the guy we draft/sign as UDFA will be more for Ellis's replacement.

that's what i'm saying --- and that Devito is being undersold here. Tangini loved him and he got a ton of playing time under Rex last year...played well.

the guy has everything excpet top end experience at the college level

we NEED to draft a 5 tech, just not as much as a OLB or a NB

Not for nothing, but I actually like DeVito to replace Ellis. He'd have 3-4 years of pass rushing experience from the 3-4 DE position over the rookie, and if we get a big/good enough young run stuffer then he could definitely play up...weird, right?

On 2nd thought...maybe I'm just crazy there. I think there's a basis in some kind of believable theory there, but I can't articulate it soooooooo........yeah.
