QB Grothe's football future still up in the air

http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf/2010/0...n-the-air.html

Two days after he was passed over in the NFL draft, former USF quarterback Matt Grothe is still exploring his best options to begin his pro football career, according to his agent, John Phillips.

Phillips said Grothe has an invitation to an NFL rookie minicamp -- not a free-agent contract, but the right to earn a deal while working out with a group of other undrafted rookies. The Canadian Football League remains a possibility for Grothe, though the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who had worked him out last month, no longer have his negotiation rights. Phillips said another unnamed CFL team immediately picked up Grothe's rights and is now negotiating to bring him into camp this summer.

Phillips wouldn't say which CFL team had Grothe's rights, but three of the league's eight teams -- Calgary, Saskatchewan and Edmonton -- have only three quarterbacks on roster, while the rest have four or five.

Grothe has worked hard in the last six months to recover from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in September. He was able to run all drills in his workouts with pro teams last month, and worked out with the Bucs, who have since signed former Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead as an undrafted rookie.

LAKELAND | Matt Grothe won't have to travel far to showcase his skills on the pro stage.

The Lake Gibson High graduate and former South Florida star quarterback will attend Tampa Bay's rookie minicamp this weekend with hopes of securing a free-agent deal.

Grothe, the Big East's career leader in total offense, was not selected in the NFL Draft this past weekend. He tore the ACL in his left knee in the third game of the Bulls' 2009 season in September and has been working to get back to playing shape since.

Grothe, who worked out for the Bucs prior to the draft, will report to the team on Thursday. The first practice is Friday.

"He's doing great and very excited to get back on the field in a competitive mode," Matt Grothe Sr. said.

USF's Grothe headed to Bucs' rookie minicamp

Former USF quarterback Matt Grothe, who was not selected over the weekend in the NFL draft, has accepted an invitation to participate in the Bucs' rookie minicamp on Friday, hoping to land a free-agent contract.

"I had a good workout with them -- they were happy with it and so was I," Grothe said. "Everybody that comes into these minicamps isn't guaranteed anything. It's time for me to go out and prove myself."

Grothe said he had similar offers from two other NFL teams, but his first shot at the pros will come in Tampa, where he made a name for himself as USF's starting quarterback, finishing as the Big East's all-time career leader in total offense. Grothe has spent the last seven months returning to full strength from a season-ending knee injury he suffered in the third game of last season in September.

"I feel real good," said Grothe, who will be in a live practice for the first time since his injury -- the Bucs' minicamp runs from Friday through Sunday.

Grothe said he's excited to have a chance at playing for the team he's cheer for his whole life, growing up in Lakeland. He and his family have been to many Bucs home games, including the team's 1999 playoff win against Redskins.

The Bucs have four quarterbacks on their roster -- starter Josh Freeman, backup Josh Johnson, then second-year pro Rudy Carpenter, who joined the team late last season, and rookie Jevan Snead of Ole Miss, who signed a contract with the Bucs this weekend after being passed over in the draft.

Grothe's CFL rights had been held by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but his agent, John Phillips, said Monday that Hamilton no longer held those rights. Grothe said Monday that his CFL rights now belong to Saskatchewan.
