Mechanical inspections for vehicles ends Saturday in N.J
northjersey.com
Friday, July 30, 2010 The Record THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TRENTON — Saturday is the last day that New Jersey will inspect motor vehicles for mechanical problems. Inspection stations will just check emissions on vehicles five years or older starting Monday. Motor Vehicle Commission administrator Raymond Martinez says the changes will save the state about $17 million. Most of the savings come from scrapping 2.4 million mechanical inspections and re-inspections performed each year and by shifting new car emissions testing back a year. School buses, limousines, jitneys, taxis and other commercial-plated vehicles will still be checked for emissions and mechanical defects. New Jersey will become the 30th state that doesn't look for bald tires, worn brakes, non-working lights and turn signals, and cracked windshields.
Will NJ car registration fees drop? Will the $17 million of savings be lost due to the inevitable increase in traffic accidents? |

Doubtful.
Will the $17 million of savings be lost due to the inevitable increase in traffic accidents?
What is your source that an increase in accidents will be directly caused by this, or that an increase is "inevitable"? Do you have studies comparing non-inspection states with inspections states that would prove that? iT certainly sounds logical....but that doesn't make it a fact. Personally (as an owner of mechanically unreliable and worn out cars over the years) I found inspection never failed me for the things listed in the article, even though I did at times have them at the time of inspection (brakes and cracked windhields for example). It only ever caught things like lights-out, which are (in my state at least) a ticketable offense, providing an alternate (and state profitable) means of enforcement. |

I think 6 to 10%, fail in these tests. I think if something were blatant it would get flagged.....I hope he raises fees.

In a down economy people hold their money tight. They don't get new tires; they put it off till next paycheck. Occasionally they slip off the road in the rain before they go to Benigno’s tires in Garfield. Then a cop has to write a report. A tow truck is summoned. 2500 other cars wait in sweltering heat in the traffic jam on RT 46 for the tow truck guy to sweep up the rubble. Ticking away the moments … that make up a dull day. Time is money. Money is power. But bashing the DMV is manly. $17 million is peanuts. This seems like a political move. Cause nobody likes the DMV or car inspections. But in my view these agencies are a necessary annoyance. They keep scary cra@pmobiles off the highways. |
Common sense
Sadly, common sense is rarely right when it comes to comlicated human activity and economics issues.
They keep scary cra@pmobiles off the highways.
Didn't keep mine off the road. For years. Didn't keep my brothers either. I guss, as one of the money-tight-dirt-poor-****-car-drivers, I can speak to the effectiveness of inspections. I always expected to fail, for obvious major problems, and never did. In any event, till it comes to VA (the end of inspections), I don't really care that much. |

Some folks need to be told that their tires are bald or that the suspension of their car is dangerous. A lot of people crank up the stereo when their car starts making noises. |

And mandatory car inspections keep them in line and stop them from killing the non-idiots. |
