Kevin Youkilis out for season

http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb...ory?id=5440748

Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis will undergo season-ending surgery Friday to repair a torn muscle in his right thumb, manager Terry Francona said.

"They took another MRI right in the [thumb] area that left no doubt surgery was necessary," general manager Theo Epstein told ESPNBoston.com. "Youk is a big part of our heart and soul. He's one of our best players and one of the best players in the league. It's a big impact but it creates an opportunity for other guys to step up and help offensively.

"If there is a silver lining, it is that it's pretty routine surgery. He'll be 100 percent and have a normal offseason."

When asked if the procedure would end any chance of Youkilis playing in the postseason as well, Francona said the team would "have to drag this out to around Thanksgiving" for his star first baseman to be available.

The thumb will be immobilized for six weeks and then be reevaluated, Francona said.

Youkilis suffered the injury on Monday night against the Cleveland Indians and was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday. He visited a hand specialist in Cleveland on Thursday, who confirmed the diagnosis and treatment.

"It really stinks," Youkilis said Tuesday after the Red Sox beat the Indians 3-1. "[This injury] is very rare. Zero athletes have had it, at least as far as the doctors have said. It was a freak accident. I don't know how it happened or the reason behind it. It just happened."

When informed of the news on Thursday afternoon, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said: "I knew this was coming. That's a major hit. It just got worse around here. Everyone knows Youk is a guy who plays the game hard. When guys like Youkilis and [Dustin] Pedroia come out of games you know there is a problem.

"He is one of the best players we have, no question about it. But you gotta do what you gotta do. You gotta take care of that [thumb]. You have to come back healthy next year," he said.

"We have to fight it. It's not over yet," he added. "You can't hang it up. You have to try to compete."

Injuries have killed their season.... they'll come back strong next year

It will be interesting to what their lineup will look like. Victor Martinez, David Ortiz, Adrian Beltre, Jason Varitek, Mike Lowell are all FA's

We know the rotation..

Lester
Beckett
Lackey
Buchholz
Wakefield

A lot of bad luck on that team for the year, once in a while it just happens that way. With such an even division, the healthiest team is probably the one that would win it.

I think they go hard after CC. If they don't resign Martinez they'll sign either Gonzalez or Fielder.

Yikes.

You hate to see this kind of thing.

Oh well.

Whaddya gonna do.

They'll have to chug ahead without him.

Suck it up.

Reach within themselves.

Close ranks. Step up their game.

Hope for a quick return, try to tread water.

Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder are not free agents after the season. That's next off-season.

Hes a big loss for them, been their best hitter the past 2 years. Yeah Beltre is hitting .337 this year, but I still would fear Youkilis more than him, he always puts up a tough AB.

That pretty much kills them now, if it wasn't for the injuries who knows where they would be right now.

IMO, this pretty much confirms that whoever doesn't win the AL East between New York and Tampa will get the Wild Card spot. Yeah, both teams already had a pretty big lead over Boston, but there was still a chance that the Red Sox could put together at least one good run and close the gap to make it somewhat interesting. With Youk out there's no way that happens.

I still think they land Adrian Gonzalez this offseason. It may cost them Casey Kelly and a grade B prospect this offseason, but I think it'll happen. Gonzalez at 1st, Youkilis at 3rd and Martinez re-signed at catcher.

Casey Kelly may be the most overrated prospect in baseball, besides.. why would the Padres trade Adrian Gonzalez? They aren't a small market team and they are currently a 1st place team.

^ That pitcher isn't getting you Adrian Gonzalez.

I can see them resigning VMart but as a DH/Backup Catcher. I can see them going after Kurt Suzuki from Oakland to be their everyday Catcher. And something tells me they will get either Jayson Werth or Carl Crawford also.

It's more about his stuff and his projectability than what he has actually done. He has only been a full-time pitcher for a couple of months.

But anyways, regardless of what you think of him, I think they'll trade him because they realize they simply can't afford him when he becomes a free agent. They may get Casey Kelly and Jose Iglesias if they trade him this offseason. Will they get that at the trade deadline? If they don't trade him, the Red Sox will almost certainly sign him to counter Teixeira. So they'll get a low 1st round pick (or possibly even a low second round pick) and a comp round pick.

I'm not saying its a lock, but I'd put my money on him wearing a Sox jersey next season.

Kurt Suzuki just got a contract extension from the A's, they won't deal until he's closer to FA.

Casey Kelly is a control pitcher, who throws 90 mph. Nothing to be excited about IMO. Ceiling being a #3, maybe #2. Stuff wise, reminds me of Ian Kennedy.

Oh, that's right. 4 year $16.25mil. That's a bargain for the A's. Suzuki's a solid catcher and he hits well also. Boston's going to be hurting at the Catcher's position for a long time.
