Jets sign Jarron Gilbert, and Shawn Crable to PS

Today the Jets have signed DL Jarron Gilbert and LB Shawn Crable to their practice squad.

They released CB Will Billingsley from the Practice Squad.

Gilbert was released yesterday to make room for WR Patrick Turner to join the 53-Man roster. He cleared waivers this afternoon.

Shawn Crable is an interesting addition. A highly regarded passrusher in college the Patriots failed to develop him. Possibly Rex can! If so , we lucked out.

I love how we're getting these relatively young guys that can possibly still develop into something . . . and all for peanuts!

Huge potential upside, low economic risk. classic Tanny!

Coach 'em up Rex!!!

Compares To: SHAUN PHILLIPS-San Diego...Crable is not as bulky as Phillips, but his frame has the potential to carry 260 pounds. He is a very good edge rusher and blitzer who relies a lot on his quickness to surprise a lethargic blocker. He lacks the sand in his pants to generate a good anchor and must do a better job of using his hands to protect his body from combo blocks and cut blocks. He is quick to see the play develop, but it is rare for him to come out of his area to make a play. He is too stiff in his hips to get good depth in his pass drops and struggles with ball recognition when playing in the zone, as he does bite on play-action. He will need to improve his lower body strength for the next level, as his only value right now is as a pass rusher.

He was a playmaker in college (holds the Michigan record for TFL's in a season), who Belichick originally had high hopes to develop into a Willie McGinest type player.

On the downside, he has kind of an odd build for an NFL LB (very skinny and long-legged) and is probably best known for a boneheaded helmet-to-helmet hit on Troy Smith that was pivotal in OSU's win over Michigan.

With the Patriots, he was known for being constantly injured. He had been active in recent weeks and made a few plays rushing the QB (a couple of pressures, I think, and half a sack). Why he was released is speculation, but centers on one or both of the following theories: (i) poor special teams player; and (ii) appeared to dog it when not in the play.

I was a big Crable fan when he was at Michigan but he's done about nothing in the NFL so far. Hopefully he can succeed with the Jets.
