[I]Information from this report was obtained from NFL scouts.[/I]

Mark Sanchez was the fifth overall selection of the 2009 draft, but the second-year quarterback doesn't have the kind of elite ability usually associated with top five picks. He is most effective operating off play action with an effective run game. The Jets play to his strength, giving him a lot of simple reads and quick, easy throws.

The 6-2, 227-pounder usually has a live arm but has a shoulder injury that could affect his throws Sunday. Sanchez is a decent athlete who can move and pass on the run. He can be a little erratic with his accuracy and can't be considered a great passer at this stage of his career. Sanchez can be streaky, and when he's in a bad streak he sometimes shows it in his body language.

The best game plan against him is a diverse one that takes away the gimme throws. He can be rattled with pressure, but he also can struggle to put the ball in tight windows versus zone coverage. The key is to keep him off balance.

His philosophy: Attack the quarterback and protection techniques with complex schemes that overload one side of the ball.

Ryan will look to cause confusion along [URL="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/chicago-bears-ORSPT000036.topic"]the Bears[/URL]' offensive line Sunday and force [URL="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/jay-cutler-PESPT0000018703.topic"]Jay Cutler[/URL] into making poor decisions by using zone pressure.

On third downs, the Jets will use their version of dime personnel (three defensive linemen, two linebackers, six defensive backs) to counter the Bears' posse personnel (three wide receivers, one tight end, one running back).

[B]The blitz scheme[/B]
The Jets' pre-snap alignment shows an overload pressure concept. Walk the strong safety (SS) and the dime back (D) down the closed (strong) side of the formation to blitz off the edge, with the Mike backer (M) scrapping over the top of the long scoop by the defensive end (LE). What they have created is a five-man pressure with two zone droppers (RE, W) playing the inside vertical hook to the closed and open (weak) sides of the formation. In the secondary, the Jets are playing man-free principles, with the defenders funneling the receivers to the middle of the field and playing with outside leverage.

[B]The protection scheme[/B]
The theory behind the overload blitz is to bring four defenders to one side of the ball. This should cause confusion in the protection. The Bears offensive line will slide their protection to the closed side of the formation with the running back (R), Matt Forte, staying in the protection scheme and blocking the first defender off of the edge. This blitz should get to the quarterback if Cutler does not use his hot reads and release the ball on time.

[B]The hot reads[/B]
The Bears' receivers will sight adjust to the blitz look from the Jets and convert their routes into three-step concepts to give Cutler quick, easy targets. Both [URL="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/johnny-knox-PESPT0000008661.topic"]Johnny Knox[/URL] (X) and Earl Bennett (W) will run the three-step slant, while tight end [URL="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/greg-olsen-PESPT008269.topic"]Greg Olsen[/URL] (Y) will run the 5-yard stick out. To complete the routes, [URL="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/devin-hester-PESPT007248.topic"]Devin Hester[/URL] (Z) will release vertically up the field to give Cutler a deep option. To beat the blitz, the Bears' receivers have to be on the same page with Cutler at the line of scrimmage and make the pre-snap adjustments.

[B]The risk[/B]
There are multiple ways to get in trouble against the Jets' blitz concept. Mark doesn't have elite ability? Based on what?

He has a stronger arm than Bradford who was the #1 overall pick.

He was the most highly recruited QB prospect in the country and played at USC. How can he not have elite ability?

He might not have a top 10 canon, his arm isn't as strong as stafford for example, but he has a solid arm and his footwork and mobility are physical traits that stafford and bradford could only dream of having.

He throws better on the move than 99% of quaterbacks out there.

Really? I think the guy can make all the throws but he does not have a cannon. Again, good enough arm to make every throw. He is just second year newbie going through the pains of becoming an NFL Qb. No more no less.

I think from top to bottom the analysts here don't do a good job of accurately describing the Jets. Sanchez IS an elite talent, but a headcase. He lacks experience. His QB rating is HIGHER with 5+ rushers.

This guy is trying to paint a picture, but seems as if he doesn't even watch the football games.

Defensively we haven't been getting INTs this year. Jets DBs don't jump underneath. It's what it is.

Jets do overload, but also stunt up the middle. I don't think the Bears' writers watched 1 Jets game this season.

He would be better than 54% with a horrific 6.4 avg if he had "elite ability." How long will it take for this ability to show itself? 3 years? 5 years? 8 years?

Most of the rest of the league believes that Sanchez is not an elite talent and that QB is one of the weak spots on the Jets at this point in time. They'd be correct at this point in time. Sanchez will probably and hopefully improve to the point that he is a strength on more days than he is a weakness but he's not there yet.

Regarding his footwork and his moblilty. When pressure he gets into the habit of throwing off his back foot. His mobility? He ccan certainly move around back there but he is still inexperienced as far as when to stop up, when to roll out due to a rush and when to run the ball when the defense has blown contain or are flat out giving him 10 yards to run.

He has already improved this year from last by leading the Jets to a number of late wins. He has to string those good games of his together as does his team mates.

This guy is trying to paint a picture, but seems as if he doesn't even watch the football games. Defensively we haven't been getting INTs this year. Jets DBs don't jump underneath. It's what it is. Jets do overload, but also stunt up the middle. I don't think the Bears' writers watched 1 Jets game this season.

Beerfish Hall Of Fame Join Date: Aug 2004 Posts: 19,116	Most of the rest of the league believes that Sanchez is not an elite talent and that QB is one of the weak spots on the Jets at this point in time. They'd be correct at this point in time. Sanchez will probably and hopefully improve to the point that he is a strength on more days than he is a weakness but he's not there yet. Regarding his footwork and his moblilty. When pressure he gets into the habit of throwing off his back foot. His mobility? He ccan certainly move around back there but he is still inexperienced as far as when to stop up, when to roll out due to a rush and when to run the ball when the defense has blown contain or are flat out giving him 10 yards to run. He has already improved this year from last by leading the Jets to a number of late wins. He has to string those good games of his together as does his team mates.
