Egypt Update Thread: Mubarek to Step Down, Millitary Council to Rule (merged)
Per multiple media sources.
A Millitary Council will be taking power in Egypt, for now. Not much word as yet how long, how they'll rule (they claim they will not be ruling by the Egyptian Constitution at all during this power change) or what plans exist for elections. |

I wonder if they told him to walk like an Egyptian on his way out. That would have been sweet.

Mubarak is not stepping down any time soon. He reaffirmed his stance of stepping down after elections in the fall.
Response of U.S. government official: "Not what we were told would happen, not what we wanted to happen." |

Regardless, if he stays, they'll be rounding up kids and throwing them into the memory hole until Sept. |

Why did BO have to rush to give his speech before the Mubarak's speech? Is he in such rush to grandstand? Did he want to say we have a regime change without an invasion? Or did he just want to hear himself speak again? The Saudis are worried about BO embarrassing Mubarak, and here is Mubarak making BO look silly.
Once again his amatuer status screams out loud. |

I don't know how true but the Turkish Press is reporting that he has fled Egypt and is in Saudi Arabia or Emirates.

how fuking pathetic is this....
Mr. Obama watched Mr. Mubarak’s speech on board Air Force One, returning from a trip to Michigan, the press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said. As soon as he arrived at the White House, Mr. Obama huddled with his national security aides. The administration appeared as taken aback by Mr. Mubarak’s speech as the crowds in Tahrir Square. The director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon E. Panetta, testified before the House of Representatives on Thursday morning that there was a “strong likelihood” that Mr. Mubarak would step down by the end of the day. American officials said Mr. Panetta was basing his statement not on secret intelligence but on media broadcasts, which began circulating before he sat down before the House Intelligence Committee. But a senior administration official said Mr. Obama had also expected that Egypt was on the cusp of dramatic change. Speaking at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, he said, “We are witnessing history unfold,” adding, “America will do everything we can to support an orderly and genuine transition to democracy.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/11/world/middleeast/11diplomacy.html?_r=1 |

I wouldn't be surprised if he planned on stepping down yesterday until he heard BO rambling on before and decided to give him one last slap.
