OT: New Watch

So, I'm graduating from my residency program at Nassau University Medical Center this June. As a gift, my parents want to get me a nice watch. Do you guys suggest any watch that are good for formal wear (not everyday use) for 3-5K range. I was thinking of the Cartier Pasha Seatimer, even though it may be a lil bit over this range.

My fiancee already got me this watch for work/everyday use. I am very abusive towards my watches, so she thought this may be durable and stylish.

I remember him being a big rolex guy. The only one that is in this price range is the Air King and I'm not too hot about it. I really like the Yatchmaster but its way too expensive.

So... do you want a formal watch or an everyday watch that you can dress up with a suit & tie?

The stainless Rolex Sub that Locke posted would be your best bet, and right under that 5k cap. For closer to 3-4k look at brands like Breitling, Omega, TAG. They all make sporty watches that can be dressed up or down.

For Tag, check out the Carrera line; Omega, look at the Seamaster, Speedmaster, and the Seamaster Aqua Terra (they just redesigned and it looks [B]great[/B]).

These are my own personal preferences. Go to a reputable jewelry store and try on what you like.

i already have a everyday watch. Plus I work in the OR, so my hands always being washed and getting dirty so I dont want to ruin a nice watch. I want something only for formal occasions (weddings, etc.) Like i said, that is a nice watch but that'll run way over 5K

I posted a similar thread a few years ago and got many responses. I wound up going with the Rolex Sub that Locke posted. It's perfect for everyday use as well as formal occasions. I think it's the retail on it is around $6K now but you can get it for under $5K from a good gray market dealer.

If you really are set on wearing it only for formal occasions you should get a watch winder (if it is an automatic watch) since formal occasions are usually few and far between.

Are you looking for a steel watch, leather strap, etc? Post some specifics and we'll throw ideas at you.

3 to 5k for a watch is insane. It seems to me that the whole point of these watches is to prove you can throw insane amounts of money at things. If image means that much to someone they probably NEED the watch. I say look into a Luminox titanium, it is all the watch you will ever need. If you want a dress watch, find a nice looking Seiko or anything else, it only has to keep time for the amount of time your dressed up.

I totally understand what you're saying. There is absolutely some kind of "prestige" factor built into anyone that purchases these watches. But that can be said of anything. My dad does well for himself, but drives around a Mazda and an Acura. He feels its ridiculous to spend more than 20-30K for a car, especially because it will depreciate the minute you drive it out the lot. The same can be said for $300 designer jeans or $150 sneakers. Everyone has their own limits what they refuse to pay for a certain product. People spend hundreds of dollars on a bottle of wine, when they all do the same job. I just wanted some advice from the board on certain types of watches. But I understand

Case size is the diameter of the dial. Totally depends on the size of your wrist and your own preference.

Quartz just means it's battery operated, as opposed to self-winding (automatic). A quartz watch is typically more accurate to the second than an automatic watch. It's also cheaper than an auto. Aesthetically, there's no difference -- except that the second hand "ticks" on a quartz watch, while it "sweeps" on an auto.
