Bill Parcells to tape ESPN draft special
Bill Parcells to tape ESPN draft special
ESPN.com news services BRISTOL, Conn. -- Bill Parcells is no longer affiliated with the Miami Dolphins and will tape a draft special for ESPN. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said Thursday "he's not associated with the team anymore in any official capacity." Parcells turned control of Miami's football operations over to general manager Jeff Ireland shortly before last season. He later cleaned out his office and stopped working at the Dolphins' complex, but still served as a consultant. Parcells was hired in Miami after the 2007 season. Parcells was hired by Wayne Huizenga as the Dolphins staggered to the end of a 1-15 season in 2007. In the Parcells regime's first year in 2008, Miami made a great leap forward to 11-6 and a playoff berth under first-year NFL coach Tony Sparano, who also came from the Cowboys. As a coach, Parcells took over losing teams with the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys and transformed them into winners. He won five division titles in 19 seasons and led the Giants to two Super Bowl championships. Parcells is scheduled to tape a 90-minute special about the inner workings of the draft next month. ESPN says that "is all that's planned at this time" for Parcells. Parcells worked as a studio analyst for ESPN in 2001-02 and 2007 between NFL jobs. And another 45 minutes for not telling Payton Manning that he would have selected him with the 1st pick in the draft at the end of his JR year.

Alot of hate on Parcells, but he has a history of success in the league and I am personally a big fan of his. Yeah, every GM has their own Vernon Gholston moments, but all in all he has a sick history of drafting in the first round. Will definitely watch this show.
His draft history - pulled from another site) 1- Starting from when he took his first Head Coaching job in 1983 for the GIANTS. (Not sure of how much input he had in these) 1983' Terry Kinard, Defensive Back- Clemson 1984' Carl Banks, Outside Linebacker- Michigan State 1985' George Adams, Running back- Kentucky 1986' Eric Dorsey, Defensive End- Notre Dame 1987' Mark Ingram, Wide Receiver- Michigan State 1988' Eric Moore, Offensive Guard- Indiana 1989' Brian Williams, Center- Minnesota 1990' Rodney Hampton, Running Back- Georgia Retired, Football analyst for NBC Sports from 1991–1992 Head Coach for the Patriots 1993' Drew Bledsoe, Quarterback- Washington State 1994' Willie McGinest, Linebacker- USC 1995' Ty Law, Defensive Back- Michigan 1996' Terry Glenn, Wide Receiver- Ohio State Left the Patriots due to the fact owner Robert Kraft made BP take Terry Glenn, when BP wanted to draft a defensive player. Head Coach/ GM for the Jets 1997' James Farrior, Linebacker- Virginia 1998'-1999' No picks 2000a' Shaun Ellis, Defensive End- Tennessee 2000b' John Abraham, Defensive End- South Carolina 2000c' Chad Pennington, Quarterback- Marshall 2000d' Anthony Becht, Tight End- West Virginia Retired from football for the second time Cowboys Head Coach 2003' Terence Newman, Cornerback- Kansas State 2004' No pick 2005a' DeMarcus Ware, Linebacker- Troy 2005b' Marcus Spears, Defensive End- LSU 2006' Bobby Carpenter, Linebacker- Ohio State Dolphins GM 2008' Jake Long, Offensive tackle- Michigan 2009' Vontae Davis. His overall record of drafting and free agent pick ups is very spotty. But, in the mind of this poster, the venom for Parcells exists because he is all about himself. His record of arrogance and greed would be legendary except for the apologists in the media. |

The difference between Parcells and Steinbrenner was that even though they were both arrogant ego maniacs, at least George was loyal to one team. Of course its not an apples to apples comparison as one was an owner and another head coach. But Parcells showed no loyality to anyone but himself. His track record with what he pulled on the Patriots, Giants (after the 86' super bowl) and the Jets was a disgrace. Even as recently as last season with Miami, he was *****ing and complaining about quitting. And that was at a job where he was getting paid millions and could come and go as he pleased. At one point he even admitted to the media that he stopped watching the dolphin games.....because it became too stressful. There is NFL footage of Parcells as a giants coach in the late 80s, moaning to Buddy Ryan about how he is getting tired and may retire-he was in his mid 40s!? Parcells was all about himself and his word meant very little. Great coach, average GM, selfish person. Last edited by intelligentjetsfan; 03-25-2011 at 07:27 PM. |

He had some input but ZERO final control over ALL those giant draft picks. George Young had 100 percent final control He also had little control and final say with the patriots There was a famous huge screaming match with the Pats GM 1996 when he wanted (as he always did every season and every draft) to take a linebacker in round one and the GM told him to leave the room, then drafted Terry Glenn the wide receiver. We all remember him referring to Glenn as "she" in the entire first training camp This was the principal reason why he quit on the Patriots and joined the Jets where Leon Hess was willing to give him anything including the final control in "buying the groceries" and yes -- those groceries decisions included passing on Pace and trading down 7 times in the 1997 draft (taking a linebacker of course in Farrior) and then trading down again the next year before scarfing up Dorian Boose (who he was going to convert into a linebacker) Great HC pretty much a meh drafter |

Really the worst part of it. I like how Parcells drafts otherwise...I'm still impressed at the '05 Cowboys haul because it was such a crap draft...two starters on the DL and arguably the best pass rusher in the draft...and Ware was a total scouting call because I don't think anyone called him in the teens. |

hey, whatever. parcells is like the little girl with the curl. his reputation far exceeds his record as a coach or gm. true enough he got 4 teams on the winning track but then he also dumped murrell for martin and, imo, was personally responsible for the jets not making the playoffs in 1997. for all of odonnell's faults, he was a better qb than foley and/or lucas and possibly vinny but he didn't see eye to eye with parcells so he was launched before he had a chance to show anything. and also keep in mind that he took over teams that had very talented players since they were drafting so high for so many years. i would almost say that kotite was a better drafter than parcells.
i think it's time he just retired and stepped out of the nfl. |
