Jalil Brown did well to improve his draft stock, running a 4.46 at his Pro Day.... Brown is a very underrated corner, but I'm a fan of his and he's had a breakout season for Colorado.... he earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from the league's coaches. He led the Buffaloes with three interceptions and tied for the team high with five passes broken up; he often drew the top receiver on the opponent since they tended to shy away from Jimmy Smith. He racked up 46 tackles (28 solo, two for losses), with six third down stops, two fumble recoveries, and a touchdowns save

Jalil Brown is what college football is all about. The cornerback was not highly recruited out of high school and worked hard to get where he is now. He redshirted in 2006, paid his dues on special teams in 2007 and moved up to the starting nickel back as a sophomore. As a part-time starter in 2008, he tallied 52 tackles and recorded one interception. The following season he started the last ten games of the year and his production continued to increase. He ranked sixth on the team with 66 tackles and added a couple interceptions and fumble recoveries. For his efforts he was named All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention by multiple sources.
The Colorado secondary is often put in bad situations due to the lack of pressure from the front four, but Brown continues to put up decent numbers in 2010. Brown is not the quickest defensive back in this class, but he is among the strongest. That strength makes him difficult to beat off the line of scrimmage and also makes him a decent free safety, which he has occasionally played throughout his collegiate career.

2/10 Update: Brown was often matched up with the opponents' top receiver in 2010, which is usually a daunting task in the Big 12. That was due to opposing teams wanting to avoid fellow corner Jimmy Smith. Brown was not perfect, but he did a fine job against some of the best receivers in the nation. On the year he picked off three passes and broke up five passes. With some decent workouts, Brown could sneak into the third or fourth round.

4th rnd:

Cheta Ozougwu, OLB/DE Rice. (6'2, 250)

Despite additional focus due to the loss of preseason All-CUSA pick Scott Solomon, Ozougwu finished the year with 54 tackles, and ranked among the league leaders with three forced fumbles. He totaled three sacks on the season, but lost two others when fumbles he forced while stripping the ball from the quarterback were recovered without a loss of yardage. He was also credited with 11 quarterback hurries.

Positives: Quick off the snap. Active with his hands, able to shed blockers when he maintains distance. Effective bull rusher, penetrates the line of scrimmage using strength when inside. Uses lower pad level to keep leverage on the outside. Very strong wrap up and arm tackler due to his upper-body strength. Moves quickly down the line when the play is away from him. Plays with high intensity and will fight hard until the whistle blows. Keeps his head up while fighting off blocks and has good awareness of backfield action. Good awareness when dropping into coverage. Nominated for AFCA All-Good Works Team in 2010.

Negatives: Only marginal athleticism for his position. Stands straight up after the snap. Does not change directions well, struggles to recover once his momentum takes him in the wrong direction. Lack of size keeps him from playing with a strong base, allowing linemen to knock him off balance and carry him away from the play. Limited repertoire of pass-rush moves; spin move is ineffective and fails to test inside lane. Can be fooled and is slow to react to misdirection. Does not own closing speed to chase down plays from behind.

I think Rex could work on his negatives. Can't coach the positives. lot of that's inherent.


rnd 5:

R. Johnson. WR/KR, USC (5'11, 200)

2010: Johnson, a threat as both a receiver and kick returner, was a second team All-Pac-10 selection as a punt returner and honorable mention selection as a wide receiver in 2010. He was second on the team with 64 catches for 692 yards and eight touchdowns. For his career, Johnson is tied for tenth in school history with 138 receptions and is fifth all-time with 1,351 kickoff return yards. In four years he totaled 1,750 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns for the Trojans

Rnd 6

Steven Friday, OLB/DE VT (6'4, 250)

As a senior, Friday was finally given the starting nod. He made the most of his opportunity and started all 13 games with the Orange Bowl against Stanford yet to come. Friday totaled 64 tackles, 15.0 tackles-for-loss, 8.5 sacks, 18 quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles. For his efforts he was named to the All-ACC second-team.

Friday has the strength and speed to play at the next level. He usually uses his speed to get around defenders, but that will not work as well in the NFL. Friday needs to develop some more moves and continue to add weight and strength if he hopes to get drafted before the middle rounds.

Friday is a little bit of a sleeper. He has a terrific burst off the edge and nice speed, and shows the ability to dip and rip. He can drop in coverage and shows good range. Friday has 21 tackles, 7.5 TFL, four sacks and two forced fumbles on the year.

rnd 7:

Brian Lainhart, FS Kent State (6'0, 211)

Brian Lainhart has made a career out of forcing turnovers. With one game left in his collegiate career at Kent State, Lainhart has picked off an amazing 17 passes and forced eight fumbles. For the last four years when the Golden Flashes needed a big play, it was Lainhart who was there to make it. The 6-1 free safety does more than just make big plays though.

...Kent State's bowl hopes were dashed after a loss to Western Michigan, but Lainhart's career could continue at the next level. He is an interesting prospect at the next level. He could be a fine free safety because of his superb instincts and big play ability. However, his lack of strength should keep him waiting to hear his name called well into the late rounds.

2009: Lainhart’s 15 career interceptions rank third in school history (four shy of Lou Harris’ record) and are the most among active BCS players…Garnered first-team All-MAC honors after leading the conference with seven interceptions (tied for third in school history and fourth nationally in 2009) and ranking second with four forced fumbles…became the first Golden Flash defensive back to earn first team honors since Jamie Howell in 1988

His test results jump off the page — 4.51-second burst in the 40-yard dash, 10-foot-8 broad jump and 39½-inch vertical — but that wasn't a surprise, considering he was a far better athlete than cornerback for his first two seasons with the Longhorns. The better news for Brown was that teams noted his soft, natural hands, tendency to high-point interceptions and smooth transition from backpedal to breaking on passes in front of him. Deunta Williams, FS, NC (6'2 205)

When Deunta Williams arrived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina he was a receiver. Despite switching to safety prior to the start of his freshman campaign, Williams never stopped catching the ball. As a freshman he started all 12 games and led the team with three interceptions. He also ranked fifth on the squad in tackles that season and was on just about every All-Freshman team that exists. As a sophomore Williams kept it up, starting all 13 games, increasing his tackle total to 65 and picking off three more passes.
The production did not stop during his 2009 campaign. While the tackle numbers were down a little (mostly due to a more talented defense around him), Williams still earned First-Team All-ACC honors and had six interceptions, increasing his career total to 12. On a team that is loaded on defense (four players made First Team All-ACC according to the coaches), Williams is the big play guy. Williams was suspended for four games to start his senior campaign and he has yet to get back into the swing of things, however he is pretty much a proven commodity at this point in his career.

Williams' three years of consistent production have proven to scouts that he is a safe pick and what makes him even more desirable are his instincts and eagerness to learn. Williams will study game tape more than most quarterbacks and that is the type of player every team wants.

rnd 7:

A. Albright OLB/DE. BC (6'5, 255)

4/7/11: Alex Albright ran a 4.85 at his Pro Day, but what stood out were his 10-yard split (1.60) and broad jump (10-4). Albright is a project with upside; he had 3.5 sacks in eight games in 2010.

2010: 8 games played...30 total tackles/18 solo...9 tackles for loss...3.5 sacks...Team Captain ... charted three solo tackles, a sack for -11 yards and two tackles for loss at Florida State ... tallied five tackles, including one sack for minus-four yards at N.C. State ... 2009: Appeared in nine games and started seven of them...recorded 32 tackles on the season and his eight tackles for a loss ranked second on the team...second among defensive linemen with 20 solo stops

Allen Bailey, DE MIA (6'3, 280)

2010: Started all 13 of Miami's games, playing mostly as a defensive end while also moving inside on some third down situations ... Recorded a team-high seven sacks - and 11 tackles for a loss - for the second straight season .... His 11 tackles behind the line accounted for a total loss of 50 yards, the second-highest mark on the team behind Sean Spence's 61 yards (17 TFL)

Bailey has been proven to be more consistent this year. He shows excellent athleticism for a 288-pound lineman and is playing with a lot of power off the edge. He's not going to be an elite pass rusher from the right side, but as a left defensive end he has a high upside and can be one of those guys that can simply shut down the right side of the offensive line with his ability to play the run. He gives you the best value as a 5-technique, or 3-4 defensive end.

rnd 3:

Chris Carter. OLB/DE, Fesno St. (6'1, 250)

2010: 2010 WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES)...Carter, the 2010 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, was among the national sack leaders all season. He has been selected first-team All-WAC each of the last two seasons and finished his career with nearly 200 tackles and 19.5 sacks. During the 2010 season he led the WAC with 11 sacks and made 16.5 tackles for losses....7th in the NCAA with 11.0 quarterback sacks; ranks 16th in the NCAA in TLF (16.5)...Fifth in the NCAA in forced fumbles with four (0.33 per game)..

3/15/11: Chris Carter had 16 TFL and 10 sacks in 2010. His 1.59 10-yard split at the Combine was pretty impressive.

Carter will likely have to play as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense at the next level. He has the instincts and enough speed to perform well in that role. However, he has been adding weight and could be a solid pass rushing end in certain situations

Stanford's defense does not get as much credit as they deserve this season -- as is often the case with Pac-10 teams -- but Fua's presence on the interior line has helped the Cardinals reach a BCS bowl. Once again Fua has not put up eye popping numbers, but totaling 22 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.5 sacks is not bad at all for a nose guard.

Fua anchored Stanford's defensive line from the nose guard position in 2010. He earned second team All-Pac-10 recognition this year after totaling 23 tackles, including 4.5 sacks

I know! After wrestling with this (and believe me i did) i think just staying put, gives us who we need. I'd love to come of the draft with Chris Carter, but I think the combination of Ozougwu and Friday works.

I can't say how underrated i think Lainhart is. Forget measurables. He's a ballhawk FS that i see being successful under Rex.

The more I think about it, the more I hope they trade back to the 45 range. There will be plenty of quality players still on the board at that time.

Scenario 3 would be my choice among these options.

Johnson is a perfect fit here IMO. He isn't Santonio Holmes, but he has a similar style and build. Great acceleration and quickness... hits full speed in a flash. Scoring 21 TDs at USC is nothing to sneeze at either. He's one of those players who never really lived up to the expectations, partially because they were very high. But he's done pretty well in a big time program and I think most of the football world will look back and wonder why he wasn't taken higher than he will wind up going.

I'm not getting a Gholston vibe at all from Bailey. Sure, you can not like him, but i don't see it as a matter of him not fitting our scheme or not being able to do what's asked of him.

You could interchange any of the 2nd DEs there. Bailey/Ballard/Jenkins. We'd be picking them presumably before anyone else does, so you got your pick.

1. Philly isn't gonna pass on Jimmy Smith all signs are pointing to them taking him
2. Bowers isn't slipping to 25 regardless of concerns
3. I dont know feel baltimore could take a Wideout bc housh and mason are old
4. NO Chance in hell no shot taiwan jones is a 1st round pick especially to atlanta who has plenty of other needs. Jones is a late 2nd at best prospect unless a team like the raiders likes his crazy speed. Atlanta needs line men, DE are old, WR opposite Roddy White, or TE which u said.
5. Why would NE take Ingram there when the 4 teams behind them don't need a RB and then they pick again at 33.

I really wrestled with Fua in the 4th over Ozougwu, but felt like a NT is a position where you draft to start soon or right away, and truthfully I think it's Pouha's to loose this year. I would want them to shoot for 2 OLBs in the hopes that 1 of them becomes an serious contender.
