We're less a manpower driven economy, and more a intellectual product society today.

For example, I could post two similar charts, Railroad Jobs in 1950 and Railroad Jobs today. Back then, you needed like 6 guys to run a freight train. Today, it can be safely done by 2.

Been alot of that kind of change, both in making stuff, and broader, in how we make money today. Financial/tech stuff tends to take much fewer employees than oldschool manufacturing lines. Notice the types of businesses ont he two charts.

The lower chart shows that most of those corporations outsource to other nations instead of making things here in America.

In 1964 AT&T was a monopoly (top chart)

And your solution is?

For example, we could put in a few Federal restrictions on outsourcing, make them make the suff here, right? Of course, along with that, the cost of what they make will rise tenfold, as the workers go from Indian wages to Upper-Middle-Class Manufacturing wages.

Cost/Benefit, like everything else.

((Also fail chart reading on my part, I'm not seeing any reference to outsourceing on these charts......)

Fixed.

Cheap plastic crap. Come get your cheap plastic crap.

Cell phones.

Number one reason for replacement?

Water damage.

Make a phone that's waterproof?

No.

Why do that?

We can just make more cheap plastic phones.

Whoo-hoo.

Furniture?

Can we make some that last's for years?

No.

AT&T doesn't outsource to other nations.

They outsource to smaller American companies which wouldn't reflect under 'employment'.

Those companies didn't exist in 1964.

Really? What am I missing in this article?
AT&T, T-Mobile deal: Indian IT cos to benefit

BANGALORE: Indian outsourcing vendors like Infosys, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra are set to gain new projects worth hundreds of millions from AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile, as the two telcos seek to integrate their systems and lower their operational costs.

While Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and Tech Mahindra count AT&T among their top customer, multinational rival Cognizant counts both AT&T and T-Mobile among its key clients. Infosys too works with both the telcos, people familiar with recent outsourcing decisions taken by AT&T and T-Mobile said.
Wrong.

I guess the Jets sell PSL's because the people want to buy PSL's, right. If people didn't want to buy PSL's, they wouldn't sell them.

Everything is wonderful in Merry Merry Capitalist Chubby Land!!

You'd be right if there were alternatives. But they're are no alternatives. Everything is cheap plastic crap. There is nothing else. All garbage.

The Jets didn't do their research and misjudged the market. Not the market's fault. PSLs aren't a tangible product either, so that comparison is a major fail.

Just because you can't afford them, doesn't mean they don't exist. There's plenty of quality furniture, you're just not seeing it on your fancy trips to the Ikea cafeteria.
Of course, they outsource for cheap labor
Fifty years ago, the four most valuable U.S. companies employed an average of 430,000 people with an average market cap of $180 billion. This year, the four largest U.S. companies employ an average 120,000 people with an average market cap of $334 billion. The titans of 2011 have twice the the value of their 1964 counterparts with a quarter of the employees.

You also don't take into account the fact that much of the income of todays companies are earned on foreign soil where they have workers.

No.

They're are no alternatives. What you call "quality" is just more of the same particle board crap with a fancy label. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Everything is crap. All of it.

You just have to pay more for specialty items. Most people aren't willing to pay extra for quality.

Funny. Motorola has the 3rd highest selling phone in the Razr. 130 million of them.

Again, just because you don't shop the high quality items, doesn't mean they don't exist.

The fact that you live in your little box with only the very limited view of your very limited little life explains not only your cell phone "knowledge", but your political views as well.

Sorry guy, I have had a Blackberry since 2003. The Razor was a joke and it was a cheap phone.

Stay classy
