“He's considering it,” Reid’s top spokesman Jon Summers told The Huffington Post.

The idea, first reported in The Hill newspaper, would be to build off the skeptical reaction that the Ryan budget has engendered at local town hall events this past week. After voting in near unanimity to pass the measure -- which would make drastic spending cuts, lower tax rates and fundamentally alter Medicare and Medicaid -- House Republicans have faced hostile receptions back home.

The Senate, which features several moderate GOP lawmakers, has not been forced to publicly weigh-in on Ryan’s proposal. A vote could force the likes of Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), both of whom are up for re-election in 2012, to make a difficult decision.

“It’s to be determined,” another Senate Democratic leadership aide said, of forcing such a vote. “But I would bet yes. There's no reason not to.”

But there could be cause for hesitation. While House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was able to keep her members united in opposition to Ryan’s budget, Reid and his deputies still must whip their caucus.

That said, it’s hard to imagine even the biggest Democratic budget hawks voting for the measure. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) would be, perhaps, the most likely suspect but he has already come out publicly against both the Ryan budget and the president’s counter-proposal.

“While I am encouraged to see the President acknowledge the dire condition of our fiscal problems, no partisan proposal –- from either Democrats or Republicans –- will solve our nation’s problems or put our fiscal house in order," Manchin said in a statement.

This is the same Harry Reid who couldn't pass a budget with a Democratic majority in the Senate, House and holding the Presidency.

Why doesn’t he come up with a proposal rather than trying to embarrass the Republicans. More proof the Democrats have no plan to reduce the deficit.

It would nice to see the senate do anything.....

This budget proposal cuts 6 trillion in ten years leaving us 24 trillion in the hole...

It shows the enormity of the problems we face.....Its the only substantial proposal so far

A deal can be made. Both sides want a deal. Why doesn't the leader of the free world make a deal? He is running for office and so are the Dems in the Senate and House. They don't want a deal they got the opening by ignoring SS, Medicare and Defense when they held all 3 branches of government. They have an opening because the Republicans won an election based on actually cutting the deficit. The Democrats are blocking for political gain.

By the way the President congratulated Banner on being open to getting rid of the subsidies. Although the President allready suggested spending the savings by transfering those subsidies to alternate energy rather then applying any income to deficit reduction.

The Republicans suck but the Dems suck and are going to stonewall us into hyper inflation. Hyper inflation will destroy the middle class and the rich will be long gone with their money in other assetts.

Without a deal on tax reform the best they will get is a rollback on the Bush tax cuts. That rollback also gets rid of indexing the ATM for inflation. Those who make less then 250G's will have enormous tax hikes if the Bush tax cuts are put in place and inflation keeps going.

There needs to be a bipartisan deal on taxes to reform the code or the middle class is screwed totally.

Obama's plan is nonsense. It is smoke and mirrors and fancy accounting. It will accomplish nothing. Plus the savings are not substantial.
I am a fiscal conservative but Ryan's plan is ridiculous. Too severe.
Leave the Medicare concept alone but raise the eligability age. Perhaps increase copays. Tighten up amounts doctors can bill. Increase the age for SS. Increase the payroll deduction for SS and medicare.
Let the Bush tax cuts expire for everyone, yes - let's all share..
Then cut the Federal government with a meat axe. Forget this scalpel nonsense. Every single agency and department must cut and some must be eliminated. Freeze salaries for years for all.
