Gates should be praised for the job he did cleaning up the mess Rumsfeld left him.

You don't think the situation in Iraq is different now than it was before he took over as SOD?

He's not leaving suddenly, he said all long he was retiring.

Hopefully this will signal a shift to getting out of AF and Libya and moving more troops out of the ME, Korea and Europe.

I suspect we will see the President put real defense cuts on the table. It's about time.

Gates wanted to leave at the end of the Bush Administration. Give him credit for staying when asked by the President. He did a good job but we need a new face to wind down the wars and look at our entire defense budget.

The way I see this is that we will continue the policy of more war.

Cross breeding of the CIA and Pentagon. This is the real story of the day and we get a birth certificate

More troops in Afghanistan, still in Iraq and tied up in Lybia trying to knock off the leader. Which I thought was illegal. Middle East going up in flames.

Are you seriously blaming Gates for the unrest in the middle east? Blaming any one person; Obama, Gates, Bush, anyone for the Middle East's problems is a joke.

The other things you mentioned are policies, most of which Republican have championed or said didn't go far enough. Regardless, SOD doesn't get blamed for policies, the President does. SOD gets judged on how those policies get carried out. And in Iraq, he gets high marks after taking over for mess that was Don Rumsfeld, even if you disagreed with the policy.

Funny, I thought Gates was a man both Republicans and Democrats can come together and praise. Guess not.

I think Gates is well liked across the board. An intelligent man with the ability to compromise - unlike Rumsfeld, a real arrogant jerk.
Petraeus might be taking a big pay cut. Don't know what the CIA chief gets but a 4 star with 40 years in plus Ranger, Airborne and other add ons is pulling in $230+. Of course when he retires, he retires at 100% of his salary so that may be it.

I also figured Gen. Petraeus would replace Admiral Mullen as chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, who like Gates, has said he was going to retire.
President Barack Obama will nominate current Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta to replace Robert Gates as defense secretary when Gates retires this year, and Panetta will be succeeded by Gen. David Petraeus, currently the top U.S. commander of the war in Afghanistan, news outlets are reporting.

The changes are expected to take place this summer, according to the Associated Press.

The White House has not yet confirmed the claims but Obama is expected to discuss personnel changes to his national security team in a press briefing April 28.

Officials told the AP that Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, will replace Petraeus as the top commander in Afghanistan.

The AP report also said Panetta’s experience as the former director of the Office of Management and Budget will suit him well to take on the major budget-cutting in store for the Defense Department.

Further top-level staff shakeups are imminent – Adm. Mike Mullen will step down this year as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Robert Mueller’s term as FBI director will also expire this year. Mullen’s current deputy, Marine Corps Gen. James Cartwright, appears to be his likely successor. No replacement is yet clear for Mueller’s FBI position.
Lots of changes.

US policy to continue to provide security.

We are suppossed to leave dec 31 of this year but our policy seems to be to push Iraq's government to extend our invitation to continue providing security past the out date.

Glad to see Panetta out of the CIA, sad to see him in DOD.

You can see that we are going to have a more nimble fighting force going forward.

No more of these big war fighting machines. Small light arms with plenty of firepower

As for the CIA, they will be militarized. This can create a lot of redundancies, which will equate to cut backs
