You think our roads and bridges are good to go? We have been rotting from the inside out and our country needs roads and bridges and Americans to build them.

Nah. Let's have Guatemalan day laborers from the Home Depot parking lot do it instead. Union members have no skillz, yo...

Union jobs. Just what we need- so the mob can get their cut as well as corrupt union bosses. Anyone catch AFL-CIO pres Trumka on the talk show circuit. If there is a better picture of a leg breaker I don't know who it would be.
Roads do need to be fixed. Let's have a combo of union and non union labor.
BTW, unions have been working on the DC beltway for well over 40 years. Good progress leaning on their shovels.

Union labor is pricey but it's also high quality. I dont want a bunch of unregulated pure profit seekers, building a bridge that's supposed to last for 100 years. in China they don't have unions and their high speed rail project is a debacle. High quality costs money, that's a lesson of life. Learn it the easy way or learn it the hard way.

What does regulations and building to code have to do with labor?

They do have Unions in China for the rail construction. They did as crappy a job as the DC Unions that built the transit system that crashed in 09.

What does being a Union member have to do with the quality of your labor and your labors value?

Are you implying that Unions that represent labor are creating the specifications and inspecting the codes on construction project?

Your post is a mess. Regulations and codes have nothing to do with Union or none Union jobs. In many casses Unions have used their clout to pay off substandard work that doesn't meet code. Organized construction Unions have consistently pressed politicians and inspectors to turn their back on codes.

Union members who do a bad job, are disruptive and make costly mistakes are protected by the Union. Nothing wrong with Union workers but Unions are not creating a better trade they are essentially protecting workers rights and collective bargaining.

Obama said that's what The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was for.

So why are we still "rotting from the inside out".

Exactly. That's why the skyscrapers in NYC are inferior to the cinder block sprawl in places like Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Machu Picchu, The Great Wall and the Pyramids were built by non union slave labor and are still standing.

Take a look at the road beds in the US that have been laid in the last 5 years.

Stuff is built with a plan not with unsupervised labor.

2 years is plenty of time to re-build the USA.

Certainly enough time to evolve into a third world country.

Very true.

But saying that most unions do substandard work and pay politicians to overlook building code violations is pretty weak.

No, I think it is laughable that Obama would make the case ahead of time that the transportation bill should be approved without scrutiny or debate by implying that the Republicans are evil if they dare question anything in the bill.

Loading these necessary bills with pork is the oldest political game in the book for both sides and is exactly how we ended up in this mess.

Trying to paint the opposition as 'anti-jobs' ahead of time is desperate and pathetic, especially for the POTUS.

Stop using gas tax money for bike paths, trains that no one rides. The tax is for roads and ROADS alone. If you want bike paths maybe put a path tax on bikes and the train riders pay the full fair on the trains not the subsidized fair!
