Is Mastodon the new Metallica?

Not in terms of general popularity, but it terms of holding the mantle of expanding metal whilst retaining the pure brutallity of the genre?

What bands currently fly the flag best for metal?

Who would be the 2000's "Big 4" of metal?

Is Mastodon one of them?

Oh man...you gotta throw Lamb of God in there, doncha?

I'd say:

All That Remains, Killswitch, Lamb of God and Avenged Sevenfold. I don't care much for Avenged Sevenfold, but you can't dispute their contribution to 2000-era metal. They've been cloned quite a bit...

I'd throw Bullet for My Valentine in there as well.
