We were very lucky here, but I think the hurri**** Irene thinned out the old sick and weak trees not too long ago, so we were lucky enough to still have power...just got internet back a few hours ago.
My kids are off tomorrow because the schools are closed so Im taking the day off with them...sleep late, hit the movies, then go trick or treating until their wee legs are tired... |

Hope the team gets some work in the snow. Playoffs could go thru Pittsburg or Foxboro...he'll they could go thru New York and snow practice could be valuable.

Nice house looks like you can afford a generator and a chain saw. Good luck.

Power is back--we have underground utilities so in 18 years at this house we have never lost power, so I've never even though about a generator. As it happens, a tree took out the power station and knocked out the neighborhood. Those trees are technically town maintained, so THEY do all the cutting and disposal. Will probably take a month for them to get to us--the entire town is a wreck. _ Last edited by JStokes; 10-31-2011 at 11:05 AM. |

Stokes, just curious....what do you tell your GF when you snap pics of every drink/meal you are about to consume? "Before I have a sip of this frosty Bitburger, let me snap a pic so the online idiots can see what I'm doing."?

I try to be stealth. Also send them to my buds in Cal and some of them to my kids. I also have a friend in Hackensack who sends me pics of every new micro-brew he tires, so I reciprocate. _ |

I used to live in a neighborhood with underground utilities. I don't remember losing power. Now I live on a dead end street with utility poles. Didn't lose power once during Irene, but my town is a wreck. Still have tree limbs leaning on powerlines in my neighborhood. I don't think they can even turn the power back on until the limbs are cleared off the lines. Once the limbs are cleared, then they can start to patch. Looks like I'll be w/o power for a few more days.
I'm a big proponent of burying utilities, have been for some time. Many years ago, my electricity provider asked what I'd like to see improved the most on a list of about 4 items, and I marked the "underground utilities" as #1. Obviously, they didn't take my response seriously! |

Can't bury them all...you end up needing much larger transmission cables if they're all buried due to increased resistance from heat. |

Regardless of whether your utilities are buried or not Id still have an auxilary gas powered generator ready to go. For $1200 you can buy a Generac unit with enough power to run your entire house. Its a piece of mind fee. With all this crazy weather we've been having im glad I bought 1.

They would never too it up by where I live, too rocky. Seriously, there really are boulders everywhere, especially underground. When gardening it feels like the bedrock is only a foot down LOL |
