Can Mark Sanchez become Drew Brees?

Brees was fantastic last night. Sanchez is the same size, with similar athletic ability, and even a similar throwing motion. Brees was shaky enough in his third season that the Chargers drafted Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers. Rivers held out before Brees's fourth season and then Brees started playing like he does now. He obviously is more accurate than Mark is and has more poise in the pocket but that comes with experience. I think Mark can become this type of QB, but being patient is not easy.

It would be interesting to see his career stats at the same stage of his career. Brees' previous team gave up on him and look at what he turned into with the Saints. You never know...

Saw Brees with Gruden...... Brees apparantly works 12 hrs a day on releases in the slot etc....

1) Does mark have that ethic

2) Do the coaches believe in him enogh to throw that much?

2 GREAT catches Sunday, Plax over the shoulder 4th qtr and Keller were both pretty bad throws. Mark needs to improve his accuracy a LOT before he will be given the green light to even play a game plan like Brees.

Yeah...the shoulder injury but SD has never been a good place for talent.

Brees had pretty mediocre to terrible stats when he was in SD... why? He had to play in the same system as Sanchez. If it didn't work for Brees, why would it work for Sanchez?

Brees played his rookie season with a different qb coach. however his 3rd and 4th season with schotty were complete successes

I was thinking about this earlier today. The reason quarterbacks like Sanchez and Brees struggle early is because they are rhythm quarterbacks. They don't rely on natural arm strength or athletic ability. When they get to the NFL, throws they thought they can make are easily undercut by faster, quicker db's. Think about most of Sanchez's mistakes/interceptions. They are plays where you just scratch your head and go, what? He's obviously double covered, isn't he?

Not when he threw the ball. Sanchez is still learning what throws he can and can't make at this level. I hope he can get to the level Brees is at. He certainly has the potential. He has great work ethic and is all there mentally. He plays in the clutch, can scramble well and has great pocket awareness. He is a master at play action. But he is still young and is still developing. Right now he is doing better than Brees was at the same stage in his career. That doesn't necessarily mean he will be better or even as good (we can only hope) but it certainly bodes well for the future.

Don't give up on the kid just yet.

True, he did, but his first seasons were terrible. If people are killing Sanchez, then Brees would be dead already. But you have to remember that Schotty didn't have full control of the offense yet. The head coach actually had input on this one. His fourth and fifth seasons were actually amazing. More his fourth seasons, but still.

After accuracy, this might be the second most important thing Sanchez needs to work on, his release. Part of the reason he gets knocked around so much is that he doesn't get rid of the ball fast enough. Look at Fitz on Sunday or Brees or Eli, these guys get rid of the ball quickly, the plays are designed that way. We need to get the ball out quicker....seems like it doesn't happen often enough.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brees had his breakout year his third year playing but fourth in the league. So do you think next year Mark can match 65.5% 7.9avg 27td 7int 104.8 rating? Yea you were probably thinking another 5 years or something. Amazing how no one clamored to give Clemens a decade to maybe one day become mediocre.

Well, his TD/INT numbers are actually very similar to Brees 5th year in the league. Even his YPA aren't too far are off those numers.

Slowly improving? After being chewed out by the media and embarrassed by his head coach he can't even complete half his passes for gods sake.

Mark Sanchez's upside is Drew Brees' mole.

If we didn't have plays designed that way back when we were letting mark get crushed on every play why would you think we could do it now? Were to busy trying to fool the defense. Maybe on third and long. They SD game was beautifully called though. That's what drives me crazy. There's nothing wrong with dinking and dunking them to death until they tighten up and then hitting them over the top. Well right now we don't really have any receivers that can do that, but who's fault is that? We should have kept Marks friend around I guess.

100% Correct!!!

There are certainly things that Brees is simply better at then Sanchez right now, ball protection and pocket presence but I think that a great deal of that falls on the system that Sanchez is in.

The way NO uses Brees puts to bed the lie that you can't use roll outs etc to give your QB more time and space if those are his strengths!!! NO did it all NIGHT long and Brees looked masterful!!! If the Jets did this IMO, Sanchez's accuracy would go up as well as the level of the Jets down field passing.

If you saw the game last night on MNF NO runs a more "gun slinger" mentality offense and that is who Sanchez is and that approach would fit him better.

Indeed Schotty's approach may be fantastic for some big 6 foot 5 inch pocket passer but Sanchez is NOT that guy and trying to force him into that style of play is now clearly hurting Sanchez.

I am really of a mind that if the Jets are truly wedded to Schotty's system then they need to let Sanchez go before they ruin him!!!

It isn't funny anymore or false outrage that I am talking about. If the Jets can't let Sanchez play his game or if he doesn't fit Schotty's system and the Jets are more committed to Schotty because they believe that Schotty has some heretofore unseen coaching acumen then they need to let Sanchez go before the destroy the man's obviously dwindling confidence.

With the right system and more athletic playmakers around him, yes Sanchez can. Takes a lot of work and the right situation though.
