Probably the smartest thing written about this season
Now, I was angry for the last few days, but calmed down a bit now. And the truth is, the Jets are neither the "laughing stock" of the NFL (Redskins? Colts? The AFC West?) nor do they need to "clean the house" (how f**king stupid would that be?). I said after last season that they will take a step back, because getting twice in a row into the AFC Champ game is hard, and they had some cap-problems with resigning all those high contracts. Schotty feeling confirmed with the playoff-wins did not help either. I still expected the playoffs, but, well, didn't work out that way. Not the end of the world, next season will be better again.
There have to be changes (Schotty), but what happens in the press is just ridiculous. Let's stay realistic. So here I present what I felt is maybe the smartest thing written about all this mess, surprisingly, from deadspin: http://deadspin.com/5873340/the-new-york-jets-are-out+lupica+ing-mike-lupica Excerpt:
If the ball bounces the other way a couple times, they go 10-6 and make the playoffs, and everyone calls it a nice season, and no one is delivering encyclicals on Birmingham radio. Do people really think this team is a leader and a couple trust-falls shy of greatness? The Jets are squarely in the NFL's middle class. They have an excellent defense and a smart coach who knows how to use it, and they have way too many defects on the other side of the ball to even approach the Patriots' or the Packers' level. (And for the record, that cancerous wide receiver is better at his job than the quarterback he snubbed, Mark Sanchez.) That sort of team will go 8-8 from time to time; you don't need any metaphysical explanations for that.
|

good point. what people seem to ignore is that it is very difficult to win in the nfl and the whole process is gamed so that teams are even. so an 8-8 record is respectable even though the playoffs are missed. this is also why it's not good to diss sanchez so much. sure he had some problems and needs some work but he is also the main reason why the jets won those 8 games too. schitty? no. he is the reason why the offense is in turmoil and has been a problem for quite some time. he needs to go so the jets can improve.

The team quit, didn't play hard, didn't try. That's the issue.
A few bounces from 10-6? How about a few no-shows from 12-4. SAR I |

What absolutely drives me crazy about the last 5 or so days of media bashing and this perception of the NYJ is that we were one pick 6 in Denver from entering that Miami game 9-6 and in control of our own destiny. Yes, "a few bounces here and there" and we are in a completely different situation. The media would be now kissing up to us and predicting that we will beat Houston and have a shot against NE the following week.
How much different are we from last year? If the turmoil on the team is as bad as everyone is making it out to be, there is no way that it did not exist last year, just no way. We are virtually the same team from last year, and you can't tell me that TRich, Woody and Jenks (yes, who are all gone) would have had this lockeroom running smoothly, please.... |

I think the Rex is partly to blame, Tanny as well with some low-character additions to the team, and then some character guys who previously supplied leadership were no longer there (Woody, T-rich, Jones). Fixable if the right moves are made. |
Funny I was thinking a few bounces from 4-12.
In all seriousness, without the dumb a$$ in Dallas, and a sure TD missed twice in the final two minutes by Buffalo, we go 6-10. That's the reality of this season, no matter how some folks will try to spin it like we had a successful year. Just as in recovery, the first step to things getting better is admitting something is wrong. And in the way the season ended, and team imploded, something is surely wrong with our team and coaching. |

It works both ways. Fact is, we ended up 8-8. |

I completely agree with the OP...
Francessa said something yesterday that really got me thinking this way. Paraphrasing - If Victor Cruz doesn't catch that 99 TD - we're having a completely different discussion right now. The Jets probably win that game and wouldn't have quit in the Miami game and likely won that game. You're looking at 10 and 6 team getting ready to play the Texans. A very winnable game. You're also looking at a Giant team that may not have made the playoffs and everyone is killing Eli and Coughlin's getting fired. If you really look at as mentioned in the OP's article, a bounce here or there and the Jets win 10 and no complaints. |

I didn't say they were good, but people are making it seem that the Jets couldn't stop the run all season. The Jets let up more big plays this year than the last 2 years combined. They're 8-8. The end. |

So the Jets making the playoffs eliminates all locker room issues?
