I'm Unemployed *****es!!!!!
After 5 up and down years of making good money in NYC, but hating my job I am officially free to pursue something else. I have some money to survive for a good amount of time and keep my apartment in Manhattan and I'm looking to possibly even move. I'm not necessarily getting out of finance, but definitely not moving laterally into the same exact job as I've been miserable for a long time now. So now I have to decide on possibly a new career path and new location. Scary and liberating stuff.
Places I've considered and will be visiting in the upcoming months: Austin, TX Boulder, CO Charleston, SC California (several locations) Ideas? Million dollar job offers? Jokes about being unemployed? |

If I leave my area, Charleston is where I will go, it reminds me a bit like Nantucket |

Music scene, bars, D1 football and without the things I hate about Manhattan. Boulder is a great town for tech start ups and I was a computer science major before getting into finance. Also, my brother's buddy is a CEO for a small company there and knows a lot of people that would be good to talk to. Also both constantly place very high in the best places to live list whatever that is worth. (Austin 1 and boulder 3 I think this year.) I'm with you on Charleston. I'm in love with that place, but the job situation is very difficult there. If you aren't a teacher/doctor/lawyer there isn't much opportunity for growth for a 26 year old. |

You can have my job. For some reason, my bosses think it's a good idea to have an idiot like me as their asset manager. I make 15 year pro formas, development budgets and partnership agreement financial statements that I have no idea what I'm doing with. I keep telling them that it's detrimental to the company to have me preparing financial documents like that. The sub-woofer under my desk and the death metal emanating from my office should have been a dead giveaway.
Help me.... At some point, I'm gonna end up costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars because I forgot to carry a "1". I can only lean on my Excel ability for so song. :O |

I looked at Nashville, Atlanta, Raleigh and chose Charlotte.. |

It's a wonderful thing to be a bratty kid...I know y'all miss it. I'm the same age as the OP and quit my douchebag finance job as well in nov-2010. Took a year off to clear my head, figure out my calling, and learn the world in its magnificence.....and I'm as happy as can be with my career choice. |

I am what I am and just have to stick it out for about 10 more years. :( I like what I do but boy would I love a different job, just because of the boredom factor. |

Did you quit?
If you are on the move I would suggest Boulder, CO. I have never been to CO but I heard it is awesome. Last week I was joking with a few friends about moving there. Would love a house with a view of the Rockies in the backyard. |
