29% of GOP voters in Miss. believe interracial marriage should be illegal

Interracial Marriage: Many Deep South Republican Voters Believe Interracial Maage Should Be Illegal

Despite the fact that the number of interracial marriages in the U.S. reached an all-time high this year, there are many who still believe that mixed-race marriage is unacceptable and should be made illegal, according to a new report.

On Monday, polling firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) revealed that 29 percent of likely GOP voters surveyed in Mississippi believe that interracial marriage should be illegal. Fifty-four percent said intermarriage should remain legal, and the rest responded that they weren't sure. The survey also found that 21 percent of likely GOP voters polled in Alabama believe that interracial marriage should be illegal.

Although the last U.S. anti-miscegenation laws were lifted more than four decades ago in 1967, many mixed-race couples in the Deep South are still struggling to feel safe and be accepted in their communities.

In November 2011, Stella Harville and her fiance, Ticha Chikuni, a native of Zimbabwe, were banned from a Kentucky church for being an interracial couple. The church also ruled that married interracial couples could be prohibited from becoming members. A month later, the congregation overturned their decision, deeming their earlier ruling "discriminatory."

And in May 2011, Debra Dodd, a former church secretary from Tennessee, was fired, she claims, after the all-white church where she worked learned she married a black man. The church has denied that her firing was related to her interracial marriage, but Dodd sued the church in December 2011 for racial discrimination. No updates on the lawsuit have been reported.

I'm probably one of the few Americans who is more tolerant of gay marriage than interracial marriage- at least on a personal level. I'd be more accepting if someone in my family was gay than if they wanted to marry a person of another ethnicity. I haven't seen evidence showing that other people think this way.

Not sure if you've been to Mississippi or Alabama but there are parts of Northern Vermont, NH, Maine, NY, penn that are as red neck. So post what helps your belief system....

Not particularly worried about your socio-economic class per se.

But being a Jew, I can see where a desire to continue the Jewish Line might play a part. Being Jewish is an oddity, being both a religion AND an ethnicity, and the "don't marry outside the Faith/Race" ideal is somewhat common in Judaism, especially the more aggressively adherant sects/members.

There is a difference between being personally averse to intermarriage and saying you think it should be illegal. What the survey tells us is that in the deepest of deep south that blatant racism is alive and well in a small portion of the populace. The sample size was 1/3 of 1/3 of the population. The numbers work out to around 10% of the Mississippi population. Not surprising at all.

Since it's all likely GOP voters, then yes, it's probably fair to assume that they're mostly white.

I would think that there's probably an equal percentage or maybe even a higher percentage of the black population that would be against interracial marriage, but given their history, they'd probably be much much much less likely to want to make a law that makes it illegal, especially in the south. That would be like the first step backwards towards segregation.

On a larger-scale level, I'm impartial. But, as a non-religious Jew, I can't associate with celebrating Christmas or going to church.

I understand that people of all colors and backgrounds can have all types of personalities and above all, I believe that people who share similar interests, values, etc. are best to find others who share those same, which sounds logical but relatively few people adhere to this.

I agree. Outlawing something is the threshold for hardcore racism. I don't see any black people favoring that regardless of if they are against intermarriage.

Most religous blacks oppose Gay Marriage and a hard core faction of blacks oppose intermarriage.

Most people are fairly set in their ways and sub conciously don't accept other peoples life style if they are radically different than their own.
