I'm starting a neighborhood watch. Is this what you recommend? What kind of stopping power? Can it be used against non-humans, like dogs?

5.56 (.223)

Well, you can put a whole bunch of stuff through it. I have tons (no exaggeration) of M855 (Lake City 5.56 - green tip with a steel penetrator) in my house, but the muzzle velocity upon exit would be like 2600 f/s, which is way too low to use for anything outside.

I have a few thousand rounds of TSX (Barnes 70g). That's probably the best bet for me with a short barrel. OTM, TSX, there are many different that you can use - and I'm more familiar with the military grade rounds. I can go crazy talking about it if you want.

My green tip (M855) goes through my longer barreled rifles. I think the TSX is awesome, though (copper).

I'm all for home artillery, but what's the practicality of that?

In light of the Zimmerman/Martin situation, I'd just get a reliable cell phone and stay indoors. Put 911 on speed dial if you can't remember the number.

Richard, if you saw some of the things I own, this is small potatoes. ;)

No practicality other than 2nd amendment rights.

And zombies.

Is it bad if one has thought this through to the point where you have considered body disposal options?

Its one thing to mow down invaders through armoured peep holes secreted in your home, its another to go out and take care of the mess.

There has to be a website.

The only .223 I use is an M-16 and an M4. Other than that, I'm clueless on ARs

====================================

AR 15 is more or less the civilian semi automatic version of the M 16.

Lots of fun to shoot, and like a Harley lots of after market parts to accesorise with and to customize.

The MK18 was developed for SOCOM. The version in the picture is pretty much what's used by those guys - minus the full auto select option.

short barrel and multiple accessory rails are for close quarters combat. House-to-house, urban warfare. Allows the operator to clear rooms without giving tactical advantage to bad guy hiding in various places. Not a reach-out-and-touch-ya kinda gun, but as other posters have said, the AR platform can be outfitted for a variety of situations.

I got a S&W M&P15 with a 16" 1:8twist. (that's a more intermediate range version)

Nice ar. I have had one for 6 years and they are a lot of fun to shoot and add a lot of bells and whistles. Mine just uses .223 rounds. Look into a forward collapsing grip and a bipod. The bipod will help when you site in you optics. Check out www.impactguns.com the have great stuff. Enjoy.
