Jets really did want Irvin and had trade in place w/ Pitt

Interesting stuff. Jets obviously had a very strong conviction about Coples since they weren't comfortable risking losing him.

@JasonLaCanfora
Interesting note on Bruce Irvin, the 1st 1st rounder to sign. Jets and Steelers had a draft-deal essentially done for NY to drop back ...

@JasonLaCanfora
Jets were gonna take Irvin or Coples in the mid-20s, and Steelers would take DeCastro at 16. Once Seattle took Irvin at 15, Jets pulled out

@JasonLaCanfora
Steelers still got their man, DeCastro, in their original spot. Will be interesting to see how careers of Irvin and Coples pan out.

It makes sense....partially.

The Jets could not have been under any illusions that Coples would be available in the 20s. So, being that he was available, they took him. Its very plausible that the Jets had their eye on Irvin at the Pitt pick, but the reason they stayed at #16 was on account of a guy they had highly rated being there, not on account of the guy they were targeting at the later pick already being gone.

If you are going to trade down, you can't do it only for one guy. Rather, you do it because you don't see the value in your current spot.

But, this makes sense in the context of someone on the Jets calling Seattle and saying nice pick. I'm sure they liked Irvin, but not over Coples and not at #16.

Makes a lot of sense considering that Rex said they liked Irvin, just not at 16.

Jets should have taken DeCastro just based on the fact that the Steelers wanted him.

They drafted Faneca and now they drafted the next Faneca.

I'm still not buying that they were taking Irvin at 16, seems odd that the Jets would want to sign a small situational player like Irvin, especially when they have Maybin.

Not to mention he has off the field issues, the Jets seemed to try and bring in high character players this offseason.

:huh:

They weren't going to take him at #16....If he was there at #16 the Jets were trading back with Pitts in hopes of getting him or Coples at #24..

And Tony Pauline reported draft night he heard the Jets had a trade down worked out if one of their guys weren't there at #16 and McClellin was a possibility if they traded down...

Who knows..If the Jets trade down maybe the Bears take Coples at #19...and maybe McClellin is then there at #24..

I love how all the ESPN types praise the Steelers for letting players fall to them, meanwhile they got antsy and were ready to move up 8 spots to get their guy.

But they didn't. They could have panicked and overpaid someone to move up a few spots...but they didn't.

in the first 24 or so picks you are just about guaranteed of getting the best player at a position coming out in any draft year. they got decastro. if he plays guard, they'll have actually picked him too high for the position.

What? So just because he plays Guard he's picked too high? Whether a Guard could be rated the 12th or 20th player in a draft, has the talent to go to 10 pro
Bowls, and the hall of fame, but just because he's a Guard he'll be drafted too high?

It's not that they didn't overpay, it's that they were panicked on some level about losing out on DeCastro and were willing to trade up, which is inconsistent with the myth created by the media. I'm not criticizing Pittsburgh; it's the media I'm poking fun at -- some teams (like Pitt, Balt and NE) can do no wrong in their eyes when it comes to the draft and it's annoying.

Again people making stuff up. Yes they liked Irvin But Rex said they had him rated behind their top two picks, That means behind Coples and Hill.

Every team worries about missing on players that they like. What makes teams like the Steelers different is that they don't actually let it affect their decision making.

They considered moving up to 16 to get him. That means they sat through picks 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 and did nothing. Moving down in the draft is hard, but you can ALWAYS move up if you're willing to price.

The Steelers showed restraint where a lot of teams would not have. There's a substantial leap from thought to action.

A journalist that reveals their sources is a journalist without a job. No ones tells you anything worth knowing if they know you're not going to protect them.

What makes more sense is that they liked and hoped to get Coples, as they keep saying, but if he went earlier they would trade back to take Irvin.
