At this point, every time I see the Vonn Miller sack, I'm reduced to laughter. If an NFL team were to pull some schmuck out of the stands, slap a helmet on him, and throw him out there on the field to play RT, that's what I imagine the guy would look like.

Please call T, Sparano and Rex and offer your experience to them. They obviously do not know a darn thing about OL personnel! Thank you. |
his mechanical flaw is that he sucks.
I think it's correctable. I went back to the tapes and saw that he has a tendency to wear his helmet on backwards. |

didn't the jets just sign a couple of olinemen and draft some beef? i'm sure they're going to make sure hunter or some other guy will be able to play a better right tackle this season.
He played well in 2010, so it's not like he is incapable. But he was brutally bad last season and I think the Jets are foolish for naming him the starter and not declaring an open competition for RT. They should still be looking for any veterans that might be available between now and the opener. Max Starks for example is a free agent, the Jets should try to get him into camp and see if he's got something left.
|
Or, Hunter stepped up and his work this off-season progressed towards improving his game and coupled with the shift in offensive philosophy and new coaching, maybe he becomes a strength, and beats out his competition? Why is this not possible? What risk? What risk are the Jets taking on? They have a player in Ducasse they remain high on, and will be Hunter's primary competition. The team signed on two veteran players who have some starting experience, and a player in Heyer who has some ability and played decently well in Oakland.
Possible? Yes. I suppose anything is possible. But highly, highly unlikely. The risk is getting Sanchez crushed. Only takes one play. Might happen on the first play. Do you remember the first play of the 2011 season? Very possible for history to repeat itself. I sincerely hope that one of the guys we picked up outperform Hunter in TC and renders this all moot. Hunter will be 31 when camp starts. How long does it take to develop? Sooner or later you are what you are. And Hunter was what he was until the Jets tried to turn a career backup into a starter. |

The scheme has to be taken into account here....
Multiple players have said schottys blocking assignments left both tackles "on an island". Not a big deal for Dbrick, but hunter simply needs occasional TE help. Hunter isn't an all-pro but he is not nearly as bad as he gets a rap for. The sack he gave up vs denver was atrocious, but I think he will bounce back this year and be a serviceable player for us. Especially when the defense doenst know our plays before we run them. |
Fair enough, but in this case 9 years, maybe Sparano can do something Callahan could not?
Yeah, maybe get him some help on his off days. Maybe run a more up tempo offense where we get the jump off the ball. I've seen Hunter hold his own on an island with elite pass rushers. There are times where he just loses his groove. Maybe there is something they can do with more aggressive blocking . They seem to think they can. The idiots on this board have spoken though so maybe not. I especially like the one that says he can't play because he sucks. Very insightful. |

If memory serves correct, he actually trended on Twitter at one point in that Denver game. That is Tebow-esque. Just not in a good way.

It certainly seems like Callahan took last year off. Also, there have been some negative comments about him from Florham Park, including from our new Oline position coach. |
Let me ask you Doggin, why are you posting this? Is it because you are also still curious why he played so bad last season (just like me)? It confuses you so much because you thought he looked like such a great replacement for Woody during the 2010 playoffs?
Well, if that's the case, you're not alone. I also wonder about this? I'm not sure it's a safe bet to defend the guy, but I do wonder if he can have a bounce back year? He just played too well in 2010 just to flop the way he did in 2011? And, yes, I do see him lifting his foot and getting off balance. Really nice research and very interesting. The only thing I wonder about is why didn't Callahan see this and get on him about it?
Why am I posting it? For one thing, because I don't think Hunter is a lost cause. Much like Sanchez, he seems to have raw talent and has played well in stretches and looked awful in stretches. The difference is Hunter is a far older player and much less likely to take a leap forward. That said, Sparano's system may be a much better fit for him - with less to think about at the snap (just block your man) he may be able to focus more on technique. I play pickup football and found the site for my own use (I usually play line because I like contact, but as a relatively small guy, technique is important to me), and it made me wonder if the relatively small things Bentley was discussing were mistakes Hunter was making. For another, we just needed some actual football discussion here. |

you have to chip on Hunter's side when he faces an elite pass rusher.
Schotty was an idiot for not doing it. |

The only thing I wonder about is why didn't Callahan see this and get on him about it?
It very well could be that Callahan did notice it, and did teach Hunter. In fact, I think it's a fair assumption that Hunter's coaches before Callahan taught him the same thing as well. And Hunter may very well have used proper techniqueon, say 24 out of 25 plays. But as an O-Lineman the lapses get noticed, and get your QB sacked, especially when they come against excellent pass rushers like Ware and Miller. |

^ definitely this. I'm convinced by the first vid that when Hunter put on his cleats he forgot to untie the left from the right. If you had a 318 pound gut you might miss that one too, so c'mon people, let's try to use a little more sense before jumping to ridiculous conclusions. _ Last edited by jetrider; 06-07-2012 at 12:45 AM. |

Good vids. Bentley was a great center, too bad about the injuries.
Jets should send him Hunter to learn "deliberateness" and loading on the "earf" - and start and finish blocks properly. Anyways its a new season, looks like Hunter will having role to play. Jets seem to support this dude for whatever reason. Perhaps Sparano will get him more consistent and focussed and TE assistance as appropriate. The others in the RT platoon will have to bring it as well. Can't have Sanchez take the licks he got last year. Another oft quoted cause for optimism is Shoddy's departure |

When was lack of talent reclassified as a mechanical problem?
Brick had an off year. Hunter is not good. |

Another problem is we had a possible Canton RT before him and nobody thought they'd have to replace him so soon.
Hunter is not the guy, unless we run 75% of the time with a 2 TE set (gee 1950 here we come) and or use spread O with Tebo. If sanchez is qb and throwing, hunter will need help from a TE or something, or sanchez is meat. |

Brick had an off year. Hunter is not good.
true, but good coaching can help. I'm really hoping that we have an OC that can protect him. Look what spaz did with fins and they had nobody... We should be able to get better production out of our offense. And if we can't, get rid of the GM, his job is to get productive people on the field, especially in this market for this kind of money... |
