Darrelle Revis was seated at his locker earlier this month when someone asked if one of his teammates has stood out to him as a leader during the spring portion of practice.
“Demario,” Revis said, pointing toward the temporary locker in the middle of the Jets locker room occupied by rookie linebacker Demario Davis.
“A rookie?” Revis was asked.
“He’s vocal,” the All-Pro cornerback replied. “You don’t frown on that. You accept that. He still has a lot of things to learn. But just to have those leadership qualities, you can tell where he came from. You can tell he was a leader in college.”

This is what the Jets had in mind when they selected Davis in the third round of April’s NFL Draft out of Arkansas State. This is what coach Rex Ryan saw when he sat down to interview Davis a few weeks before the draft. It is what led him to compare Davis to Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis moments after Davis left the room, a comparison he later made public.
Ryan was not comparing Davis’ ability to Lewis, who he pointed out is one of a kind. But he saw something in Davis’ mannerisms and in his face when he spoke about the game. When the Jets’ pick came up in the third round, they jumped on Davis, a pick some felt was a reach.
But during organized team activities and two mini-camps Davis has stood out. The Jets already are using him in their sub packages, moving him inside and outside, on and off the line of scrimmage.
“I have not been disappointed one bit,” Ryan said. “This is what you get. He’s the first guy on the practice field, the last guy to leave. He’s bright-eyed, he can’t wait, can’t wait to get in the classroom, can’t wait to get on the field, be with his teammates. I think that’s why you’re going to see this young man have a long career. There’s no doubt.”
Davis, 23, smiled when told about Revis’ compliment.
“I appreciate that coming from Revis,” he said.
Davis said he learned to be a leader in college when his team was struggling and then when there was a coaching staff change. Since he joined the Jets, he said he has picked his spots to show his leadership.
“When I’m with the [second and third teams], I’m more vocal,” Davis said. “I’m a little less vocal with the ones because I’m playing more of a role in that situation. But when I’m with the twos and the threes, the more I feel confident the more I’ll step up and lead. Leading is always about timing. It’s not always about being vocal. It’s about giving an example. I always try to be an example for the other rookies, how I prepare on the field and how I carry myself off the field. “
Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said Davis has been “as advertised” and will be a big part of the team’s plans this year. Davis said he feels like he already has a good command of the playbook and believes he will be sharpening his skills in training camp, not trying to learn the defense.
“He’s mature beyond his years,” Pettine said. “If you just dropped in here and knew nothing, you didn’t have a roster or anything, you would never think that kid is a rookie. In the days that he’s off, he’s here in the facility studying. He’s constantly with [linebackers coach] Bob Sutton just mastering it. “
Davis has a big month ahead of him. He is getting married on July 7 in Mississippi, followed by his honeymoon in the Bahamas. When he gets back, he said he plans on coming back to New Jersey to get a little more work in before training camp opens on July 26 in Cortland.
His extra work has not gone unnoticed by the coaches or his teammates.
“He has the potential to be really good,” Revis said. “I think we’re all really excited about that pick.”

We don't how good DD will be, but so far he seems to be making quite an impression with the Jets CS and players.

If anything, he'll provide some speed and athleticism to a defense that sorely needed that last year.

... really looking forward to seeing him in action.

Until we see how they play when the pads are on and the hitting is going on, I could care less what a "rookie" looks like.

At most, he is not a moron and shows signs he can learn the defense.

signed the football but said he didn't add his current number 49 after his name because he was going to get a REAL LINEBACKER NUMBER when the real hitting, tackling and sacking begins

No at most he shows that he wants to be great, and he wants to put in the work to become great, and to drag his teammates with him(hence the Lewis comparisons). He has the athletic ability. You're right he hasn't shown it on the field, and for all I know he may lack the size, or instincts to be great, but it shows a lot more than he isn't an idiot. If he can ball, he could really change things around here.

I loved this read. It's special when an all-world talent such as Revis takes the time to acknowledge/appreciate/talk up a rookie prospect. Gives that rookie even more confidence to continue doing what he's been doing. Must've been a humbling experience once Davis heard how Revis mentioned his name.

As far as physical ability, this kid seems to be something gifted in the making.

Vilma ran a 4.65, 37 inch vert, 23 bench reps, 6.67 three cone drill, 4.20 short shuttle and posted a 10 foot 1 inch broad jump coming out of college.

Davis ran a 4.61, 38.5 inch vert, 32 bench reps, 7.19 three cone drill, 4.28 short shuttle and posted a 10 foot 4 inch broad jump heading into the draft.

Scary thought.

4.40 was the fastest 40 time ever recorded at the combine, in regards to the LB position that is. Davis ran a 4.61. Which was fast enough to rank him 4th amongst linebackers coming out of this years draft class. We all asked for speed at the MLB position last season, we drafted just that in Demario Davis. Kid is very fast. Which is something our front 7 (outside of Maybin) has lacked; pure speed. Speaking of Maybin, we all thought Maybin is blazing fast? Wait until we see Demario Davis. I for one think that it is amazing that Revis pointed out a rookie for praise. I simply say WOW...... That is special....

When Jet fans talk about the potential of the 2012 Jet defense,names like Coples,Wilks,Davis and Maybin quickly jump out as the players who could take it to the next level.We look at the possible improvement at safety and we can't help but salavate about the possibilities.

The player that interest me the most thou is [B]Ricky Sapp [/B]because of what he could mean coming off the edge at OLB.It is widely believed that the Jets din't do enough at the OLber position either during the freeagency period or in the draft to upgrade what is considered the weakness of this defense.Passing on a player like Melvin Ingram consiered by many to be the pass rusing OLber needed to take this defense over the top didn't quiet the masses either.

The Jet Organization and especially the coaching staff may have known something the fans and Media didn't.It appears that Sapp,a once feared pass rusher at Clemson is finally healthy and back to displaying the talent that had folks talking about his as a mid 1st rounder prior to injuring his knee.Sapp brings the kind of playing speed to the OLBer that none of the current players at the position does,including Maybin.If he's back,and that is a big "If",the Jets would have upgraded the speed at all level of their defense and with that,the ability to get to the QB without blitzing.

Sapp,Maybin and Davis could reshape the LBing core of the Jets with the type of speed it has never had.The player i am going to be looking at is

God I love/hate this time of year. How tempting is it to think that every player coming off a serious injury will be able to make it all the way back to the same physical form they had in their youth? How great is it to think that our front office has managed to uncover undrafted diamonds in the rough who have been unjustly overlooked by all of the other teams in the league? That all of our own draft picks are really players who it will turn out should have been taken higher in the draft than they really were.

We have the same thought every year at this time.

Maybe this year it will be true.

But let's just wait and see eh?

I was immediately high on Davis after looking at his measurables and tape, and only got higher after hearing about his character. But the one number that concerns me is that stinky 3-cone time. It translates to his pre-draft scouting reports, which noted that while his blazing speed makes him a potentially run-containment linebacker on the outside, his burst is more straight-line and isn't matched by exceptional agility. That could be a problem against cutback runners and -- especially since we're considering him for sub packages -- in coverage.

But hopefully he's smart and instinctual enough to somewhat makeup for that limitation. If nothing else I think he could be a great special teams tackler.

Anyway, there's a dose of pessimism mixed in with all this optimis.

Then when we include RICKY SAPP to the mix, we will have unbelievable speed among our linebackers. I trust REX will make great use of the speed of the backers and the brute strength and athleticism of Wilkerson, et al on the DL. With our current secondary adding the possibility of being lights out great in covering wide outs and TEs this year, the speedy backers can have a field day with the QBs. GO JETS!

Both Aaron Maybin and Demario Davis could provide our front 7 with the type of speed that we've needed for a couple of years now. Coples is also very athletic. I like what we're doing on the defensive side of the ball. His development as a rookie could become pivotal to our defensive success this up coming season. If he's able to spell Bart Scott as our 3rd IMLB, Scott could end up having a very solid/healthy season. If he's able to impact as a rookie, he could possibly man down the MLB position when running a 4-3 defensive scheme, because we all know that neither Harris nor Scott have the sideline to sideline speed/quickness to cause havoc as an MLB when running a 4-3 defense. If anything, he'll provide some speed and athleticism to a defense that sorely needed that last year. ... really looking forward to seeing him in action.

He has the athletic ability. You're right he hasn't shown it on the field, and for all I know he may lack the size, or instincts to be great, but it shows a lot more than he isn't an idiot. If he can ball, he could really change things around here.

How tempting is it to think that every player coming off a serious injury will be able to make it all the way back to the same physical form they had in their youth? How great is it to think that our front office has managed to uncover undrafted diamonds in the rough who have been unjustly overlooked by all of the other teams in the league? That all of our own draft picks are really players who it will turn out should have been taken higher in the draft than they really were. We have the same thought every year at this time. Maybe this year it will be true. But let's just wait and see eh?

But the one number that concerns me is that stinky 3-cone time. It translates to his pre-draft scouting reports, which noted that while his blazing speed makes him a potentially run-containment linebacker on the outside, his burst is more straight-line and isn't matched by exceptional agility. That could be a problem against cutback runners and -- especially since we're considering him for sub packages -- in coverage. But hopefully he's smart and instinctual enough to somewhat makeup for that limitation. If nothing else I think he could be a great special teams tackler. Anyway, there's a dose of pessimism mixed in with all this optimis.

I trust REX will make great use of the speed of the backers and the brute strength and athleticism of Wilkerson, et al on the DL. With our current secondary adding the possibility of being lights out great in covering wide outs and TEs this year, the speedy backers can have a field day with the QBs. GO JETS!
