Higher education in 50 years:
A web based social education network available to the global population without admission costs or standards is threatening the traditional college model. Institutions, professors, and other entities are funded through a social advertisement model along with the market for educational materials purchased by students. While this new model grows in popularity and participation due to its low cost, flexibility, and decent level of quality, traditional brick and mortar universities retain a strong but diminished presence due to their physical, social, and classic appeal. There will always be a need for brick and mortar for certain fields but there is a possibility that there will be regional "labs" where this kind of activity can be done. I think online learning is great. It allows the best teachers to reach the students that really want to learn in a truly safe environment. The only issue is the loss of traditional social interaction. That will have to be replaced somehow as well.

I'm not sure it will be *the* future of higher education, but it will certainly be *a* future of it. Online degrees are already available; all Udacity is doing (from a form perspective) is taking the cost out of it for all but certification. What will really start impacting education costs is if other universities begin accepting Udacity certifications as transfer credits
