Looking Into Buying a Bike

Love the look of off-road mountain bikes, but I realize they may not be practical for the urban jungle. Definitely don't want a road or cruiser. Any insight is appreciated.

If this doesn't go as planned, a kayak may be the next choice. No, I'm not kidding.

How about a hybrid?

They are much more durable than a road bike, and seemingly better suited for Staten Island than a mountain bike. How much are you looking to spend?

I have a Harley 883 Sportster.

Great bike, but it's a cruiser.

If I ever got a sport bike, it'd be a Ducati.

Anyone else fear this could actually be leading to this?

First...

Then...

Followed by...

And finally.

If you're not a pro mountain biker, just get front suspension. I wouldn't spend more than 600-800$ on your first bike. Don't let the guy talk you into a better model bike, especially if you're going to use it 3-4 times a month (at the most).

Disc brakes are a must, some bikes don't put them on, and then you'll need them after. Try stopping without disc breaks when your tired is all muddy. Not happening.

Hit me up with questions.

Might want to consider a dual sport or maybe a Motard like this.

Not the best of both worlds but still Hella fun and not to expensive.

Anyone else get the sense this is going to be one of those Supe threads where Jetworks asks for advice, disappears to the arcade and never comes back to answer our querries or accept our sage wisdom?

Lol, remember when he wanted to be a sports broadcaster? That thread, wherever it is, belongs in the JI canon.

Hit me up with questions.

That's exactly what I am looking to spend. What brands make respectable hybrids and/or mountain bikes in that range? How are the Novaras and Marins sold at REI? Are the 29ers complete overkill for street/light trail use?
