The new iPhone will have a totally different connector. Maybe they're trying to unload excess merchandise to prepare for that.

Yeah, Apple is reportedly finally getting rid of that connector on it's next iPhone. It's still a decent deal for those who already own devices that use that connector but just a heads up.

I have an iphone 4 and my cables are the only 3'. For $5, it's definitely worth it.
