Powell too slow, no moves
We specifically need a really fast receiver type back
with great hands, that can catch the bubble screen, Tony's offense requires this. Powell might have been able to dominate against week schools in college, but until he proves himself against NFL competition, he has done nothing, this notion that he's great because he has been successful in a couple of meaningless practices is ridiculous. Rex is a great guy, and of course he will support Powell, but we need a Bruce Harper, or a Kevin Faulk, even a Ronnie Harmen. If this thread makes me a homer, then great, I am then, if Rex stays out of all offensive player decisions, then I am a homer, but he has made a series of bonehead decisions concerning the offense that could end up costing him his job. This team could really use another back, I don't see Mc Night / Green / Powell as competitive, I want a guy that moves like Jager. |

Here's hoping that GS3 under center, and Coples on
the edge works out.

MY thoughts exactly. Somebody see if Jager is available. We need someone to pick up the blitz. Powell is faster than Kevin Faulk. Faulk was never a great athlete. His greatest asset is being smart. He was almost cut a hundred times, but he always got the job done. They never found anyone they trusted in the big spot.

Diego - Any RB with 13 carries on his resume needs more time to develop. While it's true that RB's of all positions in football is the easiest to transition into and produce in the NFL, without OTA's and some nagging injuries - last year was pretty much a wash. I think when looking at his highlight reel in college he can be a down the hill between the tackles type of RB who has more than enough game speed to break off long runs. This is something that SG doesn't have - breakaway game speed. You mentioned moves and speed in your comment/post - under the misguided premise that BP doesn't have any.
I suggest you watch the following clip at the 1:00 mark and explain to me what speed and agility (moves) are if these aren't it. He clearly runs past 2 CB's in #4 and #5 while cutting back against the grain and beats them down the field for a 75 yard TD. In the NFL there is game speed and 40 times. He ran a 4.51 in the combine, not impressive. But good coaches understand that 40 times often mean little once the pads and helmet are on. In this case after playing through last year with little game time and lots of injuries and returning this offseason with a year of seasoning under his belt I can see that his play on the field is probably going to improve. Rex is just stating what he sees and not claiming that he's going to be the starting RB in fact he has mentioned during the pressers that he will see some playing time IF this continues. So homer or not, why you would post this inaccurate post is beyond me. |

"Rex is a great guy, and of course he will support
Powell, but we need a Bruce Harper, or a Kevin Faulk, even a Ronnie Harmen." Diego, the guy you're describing is McKnight. Here's Rex's plan, me thinks: Shonn Greene #1 RB: Starter, gets the majority of the carries. 18-25 caries/game Bilal Powell #2 RB: Greene primary replacement. Spells Greene on a couple of series'. Injury replacement for Greene. 4-10 carries/game. Joe McKnight 3rd Down/Long Yardage RB |

There is just so much wrong with this opening post, I don't really know where to start.
I agree that Powell has plenty to prove, but your criticism of him is based of what exactly? He has not had the opportunity to show anything yet, other than in practice. He's killing it now. What more do you want from him? Greene is nothing special, and I'm not his biggest fan, but he's solid enough and I expect he'll have a productive year if he stays healthy. Between him, McKnight, Powell... I think there is a lot of talent there and they have a wide range of skills. |

Powell has potential ... I personally want to see him get 1000 carries this preseason.

I agree that Powell should be given the chance
to prove it on the field, I personally like backs to have a burst combined with moves, this creates big plays, and because reserve backs usually have a lot of rest, if they have quicks built in, they can dominate in short spurts, based on what I've seen of Powell, his endzone lateral to Slausen, his stooge like game performance, it looks to me like Rex forced Tanny to pick this guy, but they should have checked with guys the way asked Sanchez if they should draft Mc Night or not. The bubble screen isn't in moron Schotty's playbook so I don't know how Powell looks coming out of the backfield, my point is we need an all purpose back in that third RB slot, maybe Powell should play piano for Lynyrd Skynyrd, their piano player, the great Billy Powell died last year. I do look forward to watching Powell in pre season, maybe he can prove me wrong- but you have to understand Rex's track record with offensive players- to date Holmes is his only good call. |
