Anyone here familiar with wordpress?

I was looking into putting together a website for a friends local business. He is at the early stages and looking at a webdesigner is too expensive right now. I read how wordpress is easy to use and you would just have to purchase a domain name and a host for the site.

Does anyone have any opinions on wordpress or knowledge of how it works?

Wordpress is awesome. Easy to use out of the box, highly extensible, plugins for just about anything you can imagine and you can code hack for anything else. In the past e-commerce support has been spotty but my impression is that's come around in the past couple of years. If you're very particular about look and feel then no matter what theme you use as a starting point expect to spend a fair amount of time editing the CSS (Firebug will save you a ton of time figuring out the inheritance).

Ok one more question. Right now he has his site with a basic design running online. Can we work on wordpress and design it before making it go live? Basically have it all set up offline then just activate the site and turn off the existing?

Thanks for the feedback.

I'd hang it off the old site and password protect it while you're working on it, as opposed to getting a new, temporary domain.

Like http://<olddomain.com>/newsite

just make all the paths relative.

Yes, that'll work fine.
