Post A little love for Quinton Coples on Rotoworld....

First-round pick Quinton Coples recorded a batted pass, a strip-sack, and two tackles for loss in the Jets' preseason opener.

Coples looked like the real deal, and afterwards coach Rex Ryan described his impact as "tremendous," even if Coples' snap-to-snap consistency was a bit lacking. Still, Coples was one of the most impressive first-round picks of the first week of preseason. Other high-impact first-round defenders included Whitney Mercilus, Luke Kuechly, Melvin Ingram, and Chandler Jones.

I guess those posters who literally started threads calling Coples a bust were a little premature!!!!

From a fan's perspective, I really like what Rex did letting Coples play for an extended period of time vs. the Bengals.

Watching him hold his own against the first team, and then looking impressive against 2nd and 3rd team gave us all something to smile about, particularly with lingering Gholston anxiety over 1st round defensive picks.

Or perhaps someone was simply questioning Coples and some people took it as them calling him a bust. We are a very thin-skinned bunch.

Keep on going back to the selective optimism. One game does not make or break a player. If we can't call someone a bust after one week, then we can't call someone a HR either.

Coples was tremendous in that last game. He was in on a lot of plays. Looked tired and was sucking air at the end so needs a bit of endurance work but he was excellent.

I was very pleased with both Coples and Davis.

Maybin looked a bit lost however.

He did great against the 2's, no so well against the 1's. He will progress and get better. He looked unblockable at times, really like this guy.

How so? Lost because the D Line was getting a little push up the middle?

There was one play where he failed to react quick enough on a RB who was running up the middle. He should have went straight at him. Instead, he hesitated and followed the play allowing someone else to make the tackle, but 5-6 yards more downfield.

I love Maybin. I think everyone here knows that. I just thought overall he was a non-factor. Even against the 2's and 3's. I trust that will improve.

Davis, on the other hand, was all over the field. I was really impressed with his quickness.

Nice to see the kid get a little props on the national scale, I have to say. Gotta root for this kid to succeed, we need it.

Maybin still looks like a one-trick pony to me. Speed rush or bust.
