Posted: Aug 17, 2012 12:04 PM EDT Updated: Aug 17, 2012 12:04 PM EDT TAMPA (FOX 13) - Olympic silver medalist and former Florida Gator Jeff Demps has agreed to a deal with the New England Patriots, opting against a move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fox 13 has learned. Demps' official announcement will come this afternoon. The decision for the former Gator running back and Olympic sprinter came down between the Bucs and Patriots. Demps just felt New England is a better fit. New England is a preseason Super Bowl favorite, giving them an edge over Tampa Bay. The Bucs made a strong push for Demps. They had been in discussions with his representatives for months. Demps is flying back to Orlando after visiting with New England. That's when he will make is announcement. In four years at Florida, Demps had 2,470 career yards rushing and 23 touchdowns. He did not attend any college football senior all-star games or take part in any NFL draft workouts. ESPN just sent me one of those Scorecenter alerts saying "Patriots agree to sign olympic sprinter Jeff Demps (was RB/KR at Florida), according to multiple sources."
Hopefully they're wrong. |

Demps is flying to Orando, Fla., Friday to meet with his representatives and go over the details of the agreement. He is expected to make an announcement at 5 p.m. ET, but multiple sources say the Patriots are the team he is willing to play for. His agent, Daniel Rose, wouldn't not confirm the agreement, only to say Demps should make an announcement later Friday. Several NFL teams, including the New York Jets, were interested in Demps, who was a running back at Florida. He was undrafted in April while he was preparing for the Olympics. He was part of the 400-meter relay team that finished second. The 5-foot-7, 191-pound Demps played in 12 games last season at the University of Florida, rushing for 569 yards and six touchdowns. Once Demps officially arrives in New England, his biggest impact could be on the Patriots' return game. Never heard a word that he had visited. With Ridley going down in practice, maybe it was a knee and not a hamstring as reported?
Even if it's just to use him as KR for now, that would be great. Nobody on the roster fits the bill. |
