Mehta: Rex Ryan remains optimistic about a Jets offense that is 'a work in progress'

The fact that the Jets are the only team in the league without an offensive touchdown though the first two preseason games doesn’t make Rex Ryan a happy camper.

“Yeah, it bothers me,” Ryan said Monday before practice. “We don’t need to be at our best right now. We need to be at our best opening day. I’m confident that when we get going (in the regular season). We will be. I’ve seen some encouraging signs. We’re heading in the right direction. It might not be obvious to everybody and in the public. Again, I’m confident. I’m confident in our offense. I’m confident in our coaching staff. I’m confident in our players. I believe that we’re going to have a very productive offense when it’s all said and done.”

The Jets haven’t scored a touchdown in 24 drives in two games. Mark Sanchez and the starters haven’t found the end zone in eight drives.
But Ryan remained optimistic that everything will be worked out by the time the Jets host the Bills for the regular-season opener in three weeks.

“0ffensively, the production is not there obviously through the first two weeks on the scoreboard,” Ryan said. “This is a work in progress. You put in a brand new offense. It is a work in progress. When it’s all said and done. we are going to be productive on offense. It’s as simple as that. As a football team, we will play complimentary football. Sometimes our offense is going to have to score 30 points. Sometimes our defense is going to have to give up 10 or less…. That’s what we’ve always talked about. That’s what I believe.”

“I believe whole heartedly that our offense is going to be a very productive offense,” Ryan added. “Have we seen it totally in the preseason games? No, we haven’t. There’s been some mistakes. But I’ve seen enough good things that I believe that when you start putting this thing together that you’re going to see more and more postive things. By the time we kick this season off, I think we’ll be where we need to be.”

This from the same guy that said Wayne Hunter was the best backup tackle in the league. Is there a way to add Rex to my ignore list?

Today's practice is at 1 p.m. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano will address the media this afternoon.

You've been warned about this before, and yet you continue to do it. Enjoy your vacation, you child.

Just watched it. Heard a lot of excuses for Hunter. Got the JPP excuse. I got the feeling Hunter is going to be our starting tackle.

Found it interesting how Tim Tebow is now referred to as a "Quarterback". Seems like they used to go out of their way to call him a "football player". FWIW.

This is some what of a rebuilding year but I completly that we don't have the talent to win. This maybe the most talented defense this team has had since ive been a fan. Im sure some of you have seen more talented defenses but this defense is STACKED. If we can make a move for a rt that slightly above average we'll be just fine.

Holmes (ribs/back) is out here in non-contact pinnie, as Rex said. No pinnie for Kerley.

Brian Costello ‏@BrianCoz
Kerley and Schilens walk off to the side with trainers as practice starts. Holmes is working in drills

Nick Bellore is on the field in a white (offense) jersey, not green (defense). He's in an offensive stretching line.

Brian Costello ‏@BrianCoz
CB Ryan Steed is not in pads today. Not sure of his injury

Jets RapidReports ‏@CBSSportsNFLNYJ
Monday's rehab group; Kerley, Sapp, Schilens, Lankster. Holmes in red non-contact jersey. Po'uha not outside.

I really had high hopes for Steed...Same for Sapp...tough to make the club from the tub

Nick Bellore is doing positional drills with the RBs. Looks like he's made the move to fullback. #nyj
