Your 2014 New York Jets - set to be dangerous

Taking into account obvious cuts (Hunter, Scott), and voids (Revis) but ignoring any signings or draft picks, here's what our current 2014 roster looks like:

QB (cap savings from significant cuts in parens)
Sanchez (8,300,000)
Tebow
McElroy
Simms

RB
Powell
Ganaway
Stewart

FB
None

WR
Holmes (8,250,000)
Hill
Kerley
White
Adams
Pollard

TE
Hayden Smith

OT
Ferguson
Griffin
Cornick

OG
Schlauderoff
Campbell

C
Mangold

DE
Coples
Wilkerson
Roy

DT
Pouha
Ellis
Harrison
Hardison

LB
Harris
Davis
Dowtin

CB
Cromartie (9,500,000)
Willson
Fletcher
Lynn
Steed

S
Bush
Allen
Marcus Lott

Total Cap Used: 85M

Assuming the salary cap stays the same as it is now and we carry over no money from prior years, that would leave us 35M of cap room to fill the following holes:

RB, OG, RT, OLB, S

Some of that money will be used to resign Revis. And some of those positions will be filled (and some of the cap room will go away) when the Jets sign or replace Slauson, Moore, Maybin, Landry, Bell, Pace, and Thomas this coming offseason.

But with two drafts between now and the 2014 season, and real cap room to play with (and the ability to jettison either or both of Sanchez and Holmes if their play doesn't match their contracts by then), the Jets are well positioned to make noise.

Maybe my math is bad.. but $35 mil to replace 7 starters, resign Revis, and pay for two years of draft picks doesn't seem like much.

By 2014 you will have 20 new players on the team. One season at a time.

After Revis we'll have 15mil to replace 7 starters and and sign two years of draft picks.

Oh and we'll need a QB too.

These days any good news is appreciated, instead of the cut everyone/start Tebow/we shoulda threads.

People are going to be in or a very rude shock if and when Revis leaves. Prepare for other teams #1 Wr's racking up their usual 8 catches for 120 yards and 2 tds against us rather than 2 catches for 27 yards and no tds.

You mispelled Michael Vick as "Mark Sanchez."

You mean like every other team in the league?

I get it -- the guy is an asset. But CB is NEVER going to be the foundation of a SB team. If he ends up being cost prohibitive I have NO problem filling multiple holes while creating one . . .

That's fine, I have no problem with that. Just don't assume we are going to have a dominant defense to cover up the problems of our offense. If you are saying get a franchise Qb and spend 15 million on him rather than a 15 mill CB I can go along with that.

Shedding the best player at his position in favor of filling multiple holes with medium players rarely works. You have to improve a whole hell of a lot on offense to account for the huge drop that will happen with our defense.

well after this season, we'll have a top 5 draft pick and draft Barkley or my personal favorite, Logan Thomas. then we can trade/cut sanchez and tebow, and move on from there.

Unless Sanchez significantly picks up his game he's not worth the $$. So it will be "2010 revisited" with Matt Barkley as a young QB on a team with a dominating defense and strong running game.

Your math is bad. Some of those starters will be replaced in house (schlauderoff will likely be a starter at OG, Davis at LB, etc.), meaning yo're really only looking for depth. Some will come from relatively cheap extensions (Howard, hopefully, Slauson, Cumberland, etc.). Others will come from the draft (RB, OG, S). The Jets will have no key free agents in the 2014 offseason - meaning they will have cap room to make a big ticket signing or two.
