For what its worth pro football focus (limited resource, but still useful for this kind of thing) rated him as "slightly below average" last year, not terrible and certainly useful for depth.

Here is a tweet from Evan Silva;
Evan Silva @evansilva Jason Smith trade is humorous. #Jets are gonna need to get a GM who knows something about football. No chance he's actually seen Smith play.

Continuing their right-tackle shuffle, the New York Jets are close to finalizing a trade with the St. Louis Rams for former first-round pick Jason Smith, league sources said Monday night.
Jets blog Looking for more on the green and white? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog As part of the proposed deal, the Jets will send demoted Jets tackle Wayne Hunter to the Rams, reuniting him with former Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, sources said. The two sides were deep into negotiations as of Monday evening. The move comes four days after the Jets benched Hunter. His replacement, Austin Howard, received positive reviews for his performance Sunday night against the Carolina Panthers, but the Jets wanted to fortify the weakest spot on their offensive line. Smith, the second overall pick in 2009, lost his starting job to Barry Richardson, culminating a stunning downfall. After three seasons of injuries and ineffectiveness, the Rams finally decided to move on. The writing was on the wall as far back as April, when Smith agreed to a massive pay cut, lowering his salary from $10 million to $4 million -- all guaranteed. Hunter is owed $2.45 million guaranteed on his contract. The Jets, under heavy criticism for not addressing the issue in the offseason, have reached the point of desperation. On the eve of training camp, they traded for former Panther Jeff Otah, another first-round disappointment, but the deal was voided a week later when Otah failed his physical. At the start of camp, the Jets professed their faith in the beleaguered Hunter, but they ran out of patience after he allowed 2.5 sacks in an Aug. 18 loss to the New York Giants. Hunter, hounded by fan and media criticism, lost his confidence, leaving the Jets little choice but to bench him. They turned to the unproven Howard, who didn't allow any sacks in the game. "I thought Austin Howard had a nice game for us," Rex Ryan said. On Sunday night, Hunter played about 10 snaps as an extra blocker in two-tight end packages, returning to the role where he enjoyed success in 2010. But, in the fourth quarter, he allowed a sack at left tackle, hearing it once again from the fans. The Jets and Rams have swapped draft busts in recent days. On Aug. 22, the Rams signed defensive end Vernon Gholston, whom the Jets drafted sixth overall in 2008. In 2009, the Rams made Smith the second pick, three spots ahead of where the Jets drafted quarterback Mark Sanchez. At the time, the Jets were concerned because they thought there was a chance the Rams were going to pick Sanchez. Concussions have limited Smith to only 29 games (26 starts) over three seasons. The former Baylor standout suffered a severe concussion as a rookie. Source: ESPN |

If it happens it's just a trade of two OTs that need a change of scenery...Sometimes that helps a player..
Right tackle is a different story. Smith is back from his third concussion in as many years, but is being pushed by free-agent acquisition Barry Richardson. Smith was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft, but has been disappointing through three years. He’s a stout run blocker, but hasn’t done well in pass protection. Richardson started the last two seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, but was rated as the worst tackle in all of football last year. “It’s back and forth,” Schottenheimer said of the competition. “Barry’s running with the ones right now. Jason had most of the reps all spring with the ones. It’s one of those competitions that will be fun to watch coming down to the wire.” http://www.examiner.com/article/rams...es-of-the-line Last edited by C Mart; 08-27-2012 at 08:29 PM. |

So much for all that "we've got an important role that he can be successful in" talk from Rex.

Rotoworld has become such a joke with its Jets hate. And you're right, Silva is the worst of them all. I unfollowed him on Twitter and refuse to read the **** he spews. There are others much more insightful and knowledgeable, not to mention unbiased.

Schotty really wants these turds huh? First Mulligan now Hunter...
I'm guessing Hunter will be their backup,since Smith wasn't starting with the Rams anymore. And Evan Silva is extremely anti-Jet pro Patriot, idk why I follow him because he is extremely biased. |

But here is the point; knowing the background of our GM do you believe that he has the knowledge to evaluate the ability of a player?
