Jets Offense similarities to Falcons in 77 ?

The Jets should avoid looking at how things turned out for the 1977 Atlanta Falcons, who, before the Jets, were the last team to be held out of the end zone in its first three preseason games. The Jets seem to heavily resemble those Falcons, who went on to go 7-7 in the regular season and miss the playoffs.

Like the 2011 Jets, the 1977 Falcons were stronger on defense than offense. They allowed a league-low nine points per game that year, but were just 25th—same as last year's Jets—in total offense. Atlanta also was in the midst of a coaching shake-up (like this year's Jets, with new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano) that brought about a power running game. Plus, two quarterbacks saw considerable playing time that season, similar to what may happen with Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

The Jets showed some signs of progress against Carolina, getting into the Panthers' half of the field seven times. And, in what is shaping up to be a departure from last season, the offense has produced some fairly big plays this preseason.

On Sunday alone, the Jets had five offensive plays of 20 yards or more, something they did just four times last season, according to Stats LLC

Bennett, the former Falcons coach, said it's too early to draw any conclusions. "Some teams can flip a switch when the season starts," he said. "And if their offense is able to do that, everyone will forget about what happened in the preseason."

EDIT: Holmes alone had at least 7 plays of 20 yards or more last season...what is that Quote referring to?

I was just going to say we resembled the 77 Falcons.

Seriously, if this were a proven offensive team, not scoring in preseason wouldn't be an issue. When you have a woeful season like last year offensively, and have 0 TD's in 3 pre season games, it's an issue. At least now Sanchez is getting a little more time to throw.

WIthout knowing for sure, I suspect that refers to rushing plays of 20 yards or more.

2010 is when Holmes had a lot of over 20 yarders, not last year.

Preseason means nothing. It's not like we've gone a full game without a TD for cripes sake. The starters only played a quarter the first couple of games. With Sanchez we always seem to score more in the second half than early in the game for some reason. Preseason means ZIPPO!

Didn't the Ravens go like 5 straight games without an offensive touchdown during their super bowl year? and that was the regular season. Can't compare the team to any other right now. they will get in the end zone. what, does everybody want Schotty back?

Exactly!
Sanchez looked like he was in great rhythm on Sunday.
Mark has always been a slow starter & I'm hoping it was the "Shoddy effect"
Similar to the butterfly effect

I believe that stat refers to the ball being thrown over 20 yards.

I would guess that we had 5 times where the Jets had 4+ 20 yard plays in the same game last year.........

But we have the vaunted "Tebow Package". Did the 77 Falcons have that?

Just as long as you're not saying we resemble the '77 Jets. (We went 3-11.)
