This is not unusual.
Had a restaurant when I worked in Banff that added 15% to the bill if you were 'from a culture not familiar with Canadian tipping customs.' If people were not so cheap when they went out, these things would not happen. |

This begs an interesting question that will prolly get this thread moved to the Political forum and then locked in a barrage of angry recrimination and verbiage;
There are other "groups" of folks in this country that are considered bad tippers to the point where waitstaff go online to complain and recount how they avoid their tables when possible; Would a restaurant dare do that to them...and would they get away with it without the Justice Dept. stepping in with a CIvil Rights Violation investigation? Just sayin. ![]() - |

I went to school, have a house and spend alot of time in northern VT/ Burlington, and this is nothing new. They tip in the fashion of the Europeans. It's painful to watch as a patron. On top of it, they're saving a good amount of money eating on our side of the border.

Brits are also notoriously bad tippers.
But I believe in England the wage for servers is much higher than here, requiring no tip. But when traveling you should find out the local customs and try to adhere. |

They're known as "Queebs". You don't even need to hear their accent, they all wear the same little rectangular glasses.
I have no problem with them except for the chain-smoking at outdoor tables. They've been cool to me here and in Canada. Although they are starting to hoard the IPA from our small breweries just like New Yorkers. |

The percentage I tip really depends on the quality of service. If someone provided awful service (it does happen) they are usually lucky to see 5%. On the other side of the spectrum, when a waiter/waitress goes above and beyond, they get a tip above the average server. I recently gave a 25% tip when a server went way beyond her job the night I got engaged.
I dont buy into a flat percentage across the board, and if someone is just awful, Im not going to reward them for a job not well done. |

That's how it should be. My wife is a big enough chump that she'll pay twenty percent for lousy service.
I believe there are times waiters should get zero, I may have actually done this once or twice. Thinking about it, the waitresses probably thought I forgot or another employee took it. Next time, next to the tip portion of the check, I'll write in eight cents. |
