Jets downplay Steve Johnson's success vs Revis- M. Florio

Jets downplay Stevie Johnson’s success against Darrelle Revis
Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2012, 9:17 PM EDT

Getty ImagesThere’s a perception that Bills receiver Stevie Johnson has found the way off Revis Island. The Jets disagree with that notion. Strongly.

“Stevie Johnson’s a good receiver and he’s caught some balls, but I wouldn’t say he’s got Darrelle Revis’ number,” coach Rex Ryan said, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “He goes up against all types: Big, strong, fast, shifty. He goes against them all. And I’ve never walked out of a game saying, ‘This player got the best of Darrelle Revis.’ Never. Never felt that way. Do you realize how special this guy is? It is amazing what we ask him to do.”

(And there’s the latest comment that will be printed and laminated for the next round of contract negotiations.)

Linebacker Bart Scott has an explanation for the belief that Johnson can beat Revis, one on one. “It’s like Michael Jordan playing against Dominique Wilkens and Dominique gets 20 and it’s like, ‘Ohhh! He lit Jordan’s ass up!’” Scott said. “Come on, man. Nobody’s indestructible. A lot of times when he gives up yards, he’s got the whole half of the field with no help. Everybody was doubling everybody else on the other side. It’s easy for [Johnson] to get [some yards].”

Revis realizes that any success by any receiver will be used against him. “That’s the position I’m in,” Revis said. “The success that I’ve had is the reason why maybe people criticize me a different way. You just roll with the punches. I’m not panicking over nothing. I know how to play ball. I play great ball. I’m not panicking because a guy got 70 yards.”

Actually, it was 75. More importantly, Johnson scored a touchdown in Week 12. It was the only touchdown Revis surrendered all season.

“You’d almost sign up for that now,” Ryan said regarding Johnson’s potential production in Week One. “That’s their No. 1 receiver. If they’re going to spend a ton of their time throwing [at Johnson], we’d probably say, ‘If you’re going to catch seven balls for 70 yards, go for it. That’s fine.’ That doesn’t usually beat you.”

And that’s all that matters, really. The Jets beat the Bills twice last year. And seven of the last eight. If the Jets can make it eight of nine, the ugliness of the preseason will be quickly forgotten.

As they should.

For whatever ungodly reason, the Jets ran A LOT of Cover 2 and 3 that game, with Revis playing off the L.O.S. by 5-10 yards and Revis can only be Revis in a man/press coverage scheme. So Johnson caught a couple of slants on Revis? So the F what?

It was the gameplan. And the only reason why he gave up a TD was b/c he backed off on the GL and left the slant wide-open. That is something Revis has been doing a lot of lately.

My guess is Revis is pissed at hearing all this talk and Johnson is going to get shut down.

All I can say about this article is if you play with fire, you eventually get burned. Stevie Johnson is playing with fire right now. If anybody can figure him out it is Revis. Johnson has gotten the best of Revis as of recently, but it won't last. Eventually, Revis is going to pick him off and take one to the house. Then, suddenly all of this talk will cease. They will have learned the hard way that there is no way off Revis Island.

Are the Jets supposed to canonize Johnson? Concede that Revis has met his match?

The whole premise of the piece is ridonkulous.

Revis just needs to do whatever the gameplan requires of him. If that means Johnson catches a couple of short balls...whatever. As long as we win.

And as far as Florio goes, that was very good, by his standards.

Stevie Johnson numbers would have been a lot more impressive against Revis if he didn't drop a couple of passes. Bills win that second game if Johnson holds on to the ball as he would have scored. For what ever reason S Johnson did as well against Revis as any WR. It was only one game and we have to see more before we can say it's a trend.

Can't Rex just say that the guy is a good player and we need to account for him. Instead he just feeds Revis contract demands every chance he gets.

Revis does not need anyone on his team or anywhere else telling him how good he is. The man is supremely confident in his abilities and it shows on the field.

Geeze I barely remember these two manning up at all. Did Stevie have a 100 yard game vs us or something? I think he was even on the opposite side 2 years ago. I don't remember him having a lot of good plays vs Revis and the ones he did get where all quick 4 yard dump passes from what I remember.

If I remember right, I think Revis got beat once where it was really on him, and once where Johnson dropped the ball. He may have taken him to lightly, or Fitzy. They were on a hot streak at the time.

Can't blame Florio too much this time however because it's only the headline that's really demeaning.

Stop going crazy bashing Rex. He didn't say anything out of line, and Revis can handle the pressure. It's always good to goad teams into throwing his way. Revis is good enough that he tries to make QBs think his man is open a lot of the time.

Stevie had some success against revis. As far as I'm concerned, revis is still the best. Stevie had a food game. BFD

uh not to state the obvious but stevie has to get the ball thrown to him first. i doubt if fitzpatrick will have the time he did last season and he didn't exactly light up the second half of the season.

Johnson will probably continue to average 75 yards or so against Revis. Will that be enough for a Bills win? I don't know. His style of route running is just so unorthodox which is what screws Revis up. When the Bills drafted Stevie as a 7th rounder, the GM at the time asked the DB's who was the hardest receiver to defend against. Keep in mind, this was when the Bills had Lee Evans and Peerless Price. Unanimously they all said Stevie Johnson - they said he moves so differently than any WR they had ever faced so unless you go up against him every day, it's tough to get to know him and how to read him.
