Game Tape Observations
- Jason Smith played quite a few snaps as the "Jumbo TE" yesterday. And
I'm still puzzled why he's been considered a bust. In the two games he's played for the Jets all he's done is keep his man away from Sanchez. We may actually have decent O-Line depth and to think we got him for Wayne "Turnstile" Hunter - Impressed with the way Sparano moved the multiple personnel groupings on and off the field. Other than a stray hiccup it was like we were making line changes in hockey - With all the hysteria about those "crucial" pre-season games a couple of things about Sanchez got overlooked. First his completion percentage was around 70% and his accuracy was much improved, good to see that carry over - The development of Austin Howard is going to be fascinating to watch. The media consider him a "journeyman" but he's not. He converted to OT late in his college career and needed extra grooming on the practice squad before he was ready. To destroy the 100 million dollar man in the season opener was more than I could've hoped for - One promising thing to look forward to is getting Keller back up to speed. Because even though he played yesterday he was more of a decoy than a target - Once they got up 41-7 the defense took their foot off the gas. Its human nature and it happens in every sport but if you want to be the best defense in the game you can't do it - Is Mario Williams serious? Crying like a little girl that he was getting hit in the face? Last time I looked isn't he 6-7 and over 300 pounds try earning your $$$ and hit Howard back. The closest Williams got to Sanchez was in the post-game handshake - What's BUF doing with Brad Smith? They signed him to a 4 year 15 million $$$ contract and he never played a down. What a waste of talent and money |

My favorite is Mario Williams complaining.
What's each sack worth so far? Money up front? |

I agree with every one of the OP's statements but just thought I'd throw one more in there. How about the safety play??
Landry recorded multiple monster hits (ok so maybe one was a tad bit illegal) as did bell jarring the ball loose. They both play faster than our old sludge we had back there and their physical talent is refreshing to say the least. In short - beastness. |

But I agree with what you're saying. The safeties, if healthy, will be our biggest improvement on D. |

Nice observations, I'm rewatching the game now.
A few things about the first long Spiller run (9:17 left in the 1st quarter): 1) 3-3-5, with Wilson in the slot and Bell playing up near the line, Landry as the Deep safety. 2) The run was intended to be right up the gut, based on the blocking. Coples was the right end was taken 1 on 1 by the LT, Devito was the NT and was doubled by the C and LG, Dixon was the left end and was doubled by the RG and RT. Harris read the play correctly and was in the "right" hole, which was opened by the double teams. Spiller escaped through a hole that opened between Coples and Devito. 3) Devito was lined up as the NT and got a double team. He got pushed back a yard or two while Coples held his position, creating another hole for Spiller. Maybe Coples should have played it tighter, I don't know. 4) Coples had a chance to make the tackle, but missed. There was some holding by the LT (Glenn), but I can't blame the refs for missing it. 5) Dixon got destroyed on the backside. The run went to the other side, but Dixon got knocked so far back that he cut off Scott's path to the ball carrier. Scott had to run around him to begin his pursuit. 6) Scott then proceeded to make a pitiful tackle attempt, going for the strip instead of wrapping up. 7) The All-22 tape isn't available yet, but when it is I want to see how Landry positioned himself. He was the deep safety on the play, and should have been able to make the tackle. It seemed like he was trying not to get beat to the outside. I must have watched this play about 40 times by now. Moving on to long run # 2. |

Let's remember that Wayne Hunter had one or two good performance in the playoffs before his contract and subsequent meltdown. He shut down some major pass rushing talent. Touching wood here and crossing fingers that Austin Howard's performance on Sunday is different for the jets this time around.
Pretty soon there will be a book on him and opponents will attack his weaknesses. Let's see how he responds to that. |

Should we proclaim Howard a pro-bowler? Of course not. But we don't need him to be. There's a WIDE gap between dominant RT and WH clone -- Howard needs to find a home somewhere in between . . . |

Not the play he's talking about. The TE made a 15+ yard catch over the middle and Bell drilled him clear in the chest after the reception, jarred the ball loose and negated what would have been a big gain and key first down.

I paid over $100 for internet time to stream the game on my vacation on a cruise to Bermuda and it was worth EVERY PENNY!!!!!
J-E-T-S JETS! JETS!! JETS!!! BTW, Hill and Kerley looked very good from what I saw. Loved how Kerley weaved through defenders on that punt return for a TD!

I think Scott went for the ball and was also trying to protect himself b.c he saw that Landry was coming in low. |

I dunno. I think Hunter is very sound with his technique.
He uses feet well. He doesn't lunge and get off balance. And he gets his hands on the guys. He is also a very big man and it is hard to over power him. Williams is one of the bigger rushers in the league and Howard did not get pushed. But I think this week we will learn more. Woodley and Harrison are both strong and athletic. They each have multiple moves. I am excited to see how this one plays out. |

And..everyone now knows who he is because of Mario Williams post-game claim..So I'm sure the refs will be watching him closer now.. |
