A changing Jets roster?
We are only two weeks into the season, and with a 1-1 record, we are getting calls for various people’s heads; from the General Manager right down to the practice squad. As always, Jets fans are reactionary to the whims of the weekly NFL schedule. I thought I would offer something that is looking at more of a ‘big picture.’
Rex has been here three years, two of which he took the team to the AFC Championship. Lets look at some of the recent success of the franchise: Ryan: 3 seasons/28-20 record/2 playoff appearances Mangini: 3 seasons/23/25 record/1 playoff appearances Edwards: 5 seasons/39-41 record/3 playoff appearances It looks like long-term success in this league is continuity; if you look at franchises like Pittsburgh/New England/Dallas etc, they are teams that during some of their best runs, they have stuck with a system/coach etc. Pittsburgh is the obvious choice to exemplify this; three coaches in the franchise’s history. We have had some success since the millennium change, and Ryan for two years took us as close to the dance as you can get without getting through the door. HOWEVER, while this season is young, it appears that, although the goal of winning it all is still forefront, the players could all be showcasing themselves as to whether they will be with this organization long term. First off, lets look at what this team will look like next year: (all figures in Millions): David Harris: $13/$9 dead money Mark Sanchez: $12.8/$17 dead money Santonio Holmes: $12.5/$11.2 dead money D’Brick: $10.7/$17 dead money Nick Mangold: $9.1/$9 dead money Cromartie: $10.7/$9.5 dead money Darrelle Revis: $9/$12 dead money. That is the core of this team next year; Barring a trade, these guys are on the team because there is no way of cutting them without a devastating cap hit. Then we have guys like the following: Jason Smith: $12/ 0 dead money/$12 savings Calvin Pace: $11.57/$3 dead/$8.5 savings Bart Scott: $8.6/$1 dead/$7.1 savings Eric Smith $3/0 dead/$3 savings Guys like Sione Pouha have a trader friendly contract if we chose to do so, but also a very affordable contract if he keeps producing. Tebow is all the above: affordable/cuttable/tradeable. Last edited by CanadaSteve; 09-19-2012 at 12:32 PM. |

Where it gets interesting is in 2014/2015 Given that the 4 mentioned above are released (except Jason Smith, who, if works out, will be renegotiated), here is what 2014 looks like:
Sanchez: $13/$4.8/$8.3 Cromartie: $10.7/$1.2/$9.5 Holmes: $10.7/$2.5/$8.2 Harris: $7/2/5 Revis: $6/9/ There is potential for HUGE savings in 2014, which could also translate into some trades, given that while a guy like Holmes would cost you a lot in 2013, he is almost cuttable in 2014, and IS cuttable in 2015 ($9.2/$1.2/$8. Then, in 2015, we basically have Mangold, Ferguson, Coples, Hill, Davis, Revis, Holmes, Sanchez and Bush under contract. By 2015, the salary cap will be taking a jump. This team was set up to win when Rex was brought in, and they overpaid some guys to keep the continuity after the first two AFC Championships. Team’s take a swing, and sometimes they miss. But I think these guys are playing for jobs in the upcoming seasons. This team is going to be almost unrecognizable in three years; Mangold and Ferguson will be onwards of the wrong side of 30, as will Revis. Pouha, if retained, will be at the end of his contract. My guess is we will be re-upping Kerley, Wilkerson, Powell, etc. But I think what we are seeing is a “Let’s see if we can go to the dance with what we have, and if not, over the next three years we will retool.” I would imagine we will NOT be throwing away draft picks over the next three years; but rather, we will be seeing us building a team from the draft up. THOUGHTS? |

Cro is way overpaid, especially if he continues the way he played against Pittsburgh - a spectator for four quarters.
He's one of the main reasons we lost. Revis' concussion was supposed to motivate others to step up. Instead it backfired; made them gun shy, afraid to make plays. |

I get what he is saying though. Team that have stayed with coaches for years usually do fare better. It is hard for a coach to win with someone elses bad building. I look at Houston and remember when everyone wanted Kubiacs head on a platter. It wasn't his fault he was dealt David Carr and a D that couldn't stop a thing. What did he do? He built a D and patched that O as best he could over the years. Yeah lucky with guys like Schaub, Foster, and a few others but he got it done his way.

See this is the problem with cromartie....these 2 games explain cro's entire career. When we are crushing an opponent, and the QB makes a completely atrocious read, there is Cro, to catch a ball thrown directly to him, and run it into the end zone - comeplete with a front flip. When the chips are down, and we need him to play well, he gets turned around, loses the ball, abandons any semblance of technique and allows a backbreaking TD - complete with immediate complaint to the ref. Please dont count a ball thrown directly at this chest, where he returned it with no one in front of him as a play that deserves praise. |

Nike needs to rewatch the game - Cro's play in particular - and stop telling others how to post. |

Rex is 32-24 with 4 playoff wins. Not bad for his first HC gig. He's still learning how to be a complete HC and not just a DC...
The one thing I really don't like is his reluctance to get the younger faster players like McKnight, Powell, Coples, and Davis on the field.... Rex has "his" guys and he won't bench them no matter who is waiting behind them. Greene is one of Rex's guys that needs to be benched Powell does everything better than Greene and McKnight is a threat to take it to the EZ whenever he touches the ball. Why are these guys not getting more touches???? Why was Dixon in and Coples out????? Harris is fat and slow, Scott is old and slow, we have younger faster guys on the roster but they don't get a chance because Harris and Scott (especially Scott) are Rex's guys.... |

Cut Tebow, fire Rex and/or Tanny and go into free-for-all rebuilding mode.

Fans reactions can't be taken seriously. The number one example of this is Craig Carton. Last edited by JetsFanatic; 09-18-2012 at 10:56 PM. |
