Eric Smith

Eric did a nice job for the Jets yesterday...that's sarcastic because, in fact, he did not.

Let's complain about him.

To be fair, on the 15 yard helmet to helmet penalty, he really did try his best to crush that guy who was already tackled and down.

The guy is an decent back-up who gives u a ton of effort... both on def and special teams....

Glad he is not a starter... but frankly we have a ton more bigger issues..

Some genius thought it was a good idea to have Smith in 1-on-1 coverage against Fasano late in the game. Tannehill promptly left a 20+ yard gain on the field due to a bad throw - Fasano was wide open.

How do you know when a player really sucks? When the refs make a bad call on him but you still blame the player because he was on the field in the first place.

I was so glad to see him on the field picking up where he left off last year!

I cant believe he is still on the team. Eric Smith is flat out awful, he must be a personal friend of the Johnson or Ryan family.

not sure why Rex has a hard-on for this guy. We would've been better off with Jim Leonhard instead.

Jets would be better off with a potted plant instead of Smith - maybe the receiver would trip on the plant and not make the catch.

So we drafted Josh Bush and Antonio Allen and neither can give us this?

They're 6th and 7th round draftees in their rookie years. No on should ever expect them to play more than ST at this point.

while i dont agree with the Smith penalty on the punt, why on earth are we rushing the punter in that situation? We're going to be set up around midfield (or better) with 2 timeouts (3 until we wasted one prior to the punt) and a minute left.

you're more likely to get a penalty than a blocked punt trying to block a punt.. which is exactly what happened. two games in a row the last minutes before the half were mangled.

Because Westhoff thinks he is smarter than god and will try to block a punt even when the situation clearly just calls for a return.

Edit to add: Eric Smith on defense = Shonne Greene on offense

I had about enough of this guy for every good hit he has, he has about 4 bad ones or penalties!!!! Why is he still a Jet? He can't cover anyone and the only positive he has is his hard hitting which usually draws a flag!

so what did he have:
one helmet-to-helmet
one roughing the kicker
I thought he had a pass interference on a 3rd down play too. did he?

He was responsible in whole or in part for like 80% of the huge passing plays against us last season. Yesterday he managed to get 2 personal foul penalties in very limited snaps. He might not be able to break 5 seconds in a 40. Other than that, he's great.

Here are the facts about Eric.

1. He is a hard nosed football player.

2. He is a decent special team player.

3. He is a good 3rd teamer.

He should be given a ton of credit for bamboozaling the coaches to think he is a no 1 player and staying in the NFL this long.

And right after a long scoring drive to quiet the crowd, followed by a 3 & out. All the momentum.

Fully agree. Unless you've identified a glaring hole in the protection schemes, have the offense pinned inside the 5 yard line, or are in a desperate situation, why go for the block? Far more penalties on punt block attempts than actual blocks - why do it?
