Dissapointment in Sparano Thus Far: Shotty-Levels of Predictabillity

Sparano is fine. IIRC - wasn't our longest pass play last season that like 35-yarder to Matthew Mulligan?? We took NO shots downfield last year.

With Sanchez the Jets HAVE to be able to attack the middle of the field where he is most comfortable making his throws. Sanchez has accuracy issues but the production is also hurt by a lack of talent and - even moreso - direction/identity.

The problem, as I tried to make clear, is in the running game and the aquisition and use of the Wildcat QB Tebow. We're not remotely as productive on the ground as we need to be, and our largest running talent (Tebow, sorry, but it's true) is not getting the ball, nor are we threatening anyone with him in a way that would provide any cover for Sanchez and the RB/WR's on other downs.

Again, Greene up the middle....again? Why not "Tebow off tackle" instead? Or Tebow throws to a TE so the idea of a thread of a pass exists, and removes teh rpedictabillity of our ground game?

It's like signing the fastest WR in football and having him run nothing but 5 yard curl routes. We bought this damn asset, it's caused so much controversy and distraction, we damn well better get some milage out of whatever talent that asset has to offer.

And really, if anyone makes an argument that Greene up the middle is better for us that Tebow up the middle, you're going to have a hard time proving that case.

Start Powell, run (and pass occasionally) Tebow more. Dump the vanilla.

I honestly think they are consciously trying to hold back the Tebow usage initially, for the very reason you brought up. EVERYONE was getting pretty sick of the hypothetical QB controversy. Hold Tebow back, let the dust settle, and get back to football. That being said, with the next couple of games being against very tough Ds, I think we will see more of the wildcat/option.

I thought he did a decent job of adjusting his game plan during the game, which is something you'd never see from Schotty.

I don't like the Greene off tackle runs, or the fact that we're using Tebow as a decoy at WR (why???) but he's a step up from what we've dealt with over the last six years.

Yeah. On that play, there were only two recievers in a 5 yard radius. With Schotty, there used to be three.

I'm all for alot more Powell myself, as I've said.

But frankly, why exactly did we hire a Wildcat lov'in O-Co, and the best (only) Option QB in the NFL, and drafted an Option-Blockign Specialist WR (with admitted upside at other skills) to NOT run the option/wildcat at all, even when the rest of the O is proving in a game it cannot produce?

It's a bit of a non sequiter IMO. If we were going to run a Pro-Style, Gut-Running Greene and occasional downfield toss-up type O, was Sparano really the best choice available for that? Was Tebow as #2 QB? Was Hill as #2 WR? Was retaining Greene as #1 RB?

It reminds me of the old kids game, "Which of these things doesn't belong". If having a never-know-whats-comign O wasn;t the point, we made ALOT of very odd, not very smart, front office desicions this last offseason.

When Greene cuts, he has to stop and he's like a boat with no motor. Greene is the issue not Sparano

I had actually thought it was established that one receiver ran the wrong route. He hasn't been perfect, by any means... but running game will look predictable when you have a RB plodding through the hole... I've seen multiple plays where there was a huge hole and Greene barely gains 5 yards.

Seems alot of fans think simply throwing it deep is enough to make an O unpredictable. Ok, disagree, but ok. Sparano thsu far in my view has been very predictable and the results on the ground especially prove it.

Guys are open and Sanchez has had time. He's inaccurate, coaching can't correct that.

Instead of a new O-Coordinator, give us the top 10 franchise QB we we're promised when we drafted #5.

That would go a long ways further in correcting the offense's problems vs. a new offensive coordinator.

i think the play-calling has been good for the most part.

we're attacking downhill and have had plenty of opportunities to score, we just have to execute better (missed throws/drops).

the main thing i'd like to see right now is getting the RBs more involved in the passing game. that means less Greene, more Powell and McKnight.

I'm a little surprised at Sparano's infrequent use of the Wildcat and Tebow so far this season. I thought that was supposed to be some big weapon the Jets were going going to make use of. So far it's a big nothing. Let's see if anything gets made of it later in the season.

My point was, I think he can (and has) been far more unpredictable and a better utilizer of the talent he has (and doesn't have). I hope for and expect more and better from him as we move on (this is not a fire Sparano thread, for the record, nothing of the kind).

Either way, let's wait and see if it starts happening at a 50%+ rate like it did with Shotty, before we start condemning play design. My biggest issue with Sparano at this point is why is he sticking with Greene, when Powell seems to be able to do more, better.

I think Sparano is going to be fine.. He is a very good coach and I have more confidence in him than Shotty anyday.......

He has not been afraid to throw deep and had made a point to stetch the field....

Sanchez and WR's have left a lot of plays out there.. Bad Throws and Drops...

The running game is work in progress.. Not a big secret anymore, but Shonne Greene is not going to be a feature back... Powell and Greene will need to partner this workload.. mix in mcknight...

OL & TE haven't openned up a ton of holes out there.. hard to be balanced if you can't run the ball..

Wildcat has been largest disappointment.. they have failed to utilize wildcat or run/pas option with Tebow... Suprised not used in red zone or short yardage more..

As stated, I'm going to give Sparano plenty of time. This isn't a "fire him" thread, just a "I'm a little confused at what we're trying to do here" thread, given our trades, Sparano's Wildcat past, and our last two weeks on limited offensive production. I was quite supportive of Sparano and our aquisitions....because I though they'd all work together in a system, perhaps a very risky system I admit, but a designed, pieces-that-fit-it system.

Right now I see alot of square pegs in round holes. I'm curious if thats by design, or if other factors are at play. Because IMO, we're still pretty predictable, albeit predictable with a few more deep tosses mixed in.

Another note: Sanchez clearly misses Keller. No doubts on that one, even if Cumberland and Rou-whatshisname have done ok as ball catchers.

There is a reason that 40 times actually matter for RBs. The difference between a hole being open or closed in the NFL is in the 10th maybe even 100th of seconds sometimes. When we run Greene laterally it is hilarious. He just doesn't have the first step for anything but a dive/short yardage type run. He's a great weapon in the 4th quarter for running through tired arms (when the holes are closed but he pummels through), but we HAVE to keep letting Powell/McKnight increase their work load. Also, Greene can't catch so that's one more LBer that can just tee off on Sanchez or read his eyes let alone the issue of never being able to run screen plays to slow down the pass rush.
