Who do you consider and elite QB ?

I was having a debate with a friend about what an elite QB is and who is an elite QB. In my opinion an elite QB can win games when the team around him is not that good. Do you think Eli Manning and Tom Brady are elite QB's ? What about Rodgers from Greenbay ?

Not sure if serious . . .

Oh hell yes - these are all league MVPs you are talking about.

To me, an elite QB has the base stats right: good completion %, TDs and INTs. Then add in some big playoff wins, 4th Qtr comebacks and an ability to take over a game [like Peyton did last night]. That's an elite QB for me.

So basically he's not losing the games for his team and he is often the difference in winning.

I think the media has been throwing the world elite around way too much lately.
Brady is an elite quarterback, Manning is an elite quarterback, Eli is an elite quarterback.

Rodgers is a great quarterback with the jury still out on him.

Elite in my eyes isn't a word the fickle should be throwing around. An elite status isn't something quarterbacks earn after one great game or one great season like the ESPN's of the world like to pretend.

In my mind elite is a term earned by those who show a consistency for being elite year after year after year after year. It's something you earn over the course of your career, not something you get after one big game (Flacco).

Rodgers had a great year last season but the lock out also noticably affected defenses all around the league, especially in the beginning of the season. It wasn't a coincidence that both Brees and Brady toppled Marino's passing yards record in the same season. As the season went on, defenses improved and Rodgers performance declined.

Green Bay didn't face a top 10 defense all year until one knocked him out of the play offs their first post season game. Quarterback rating isn't real. You can't hold it, you can't put it in a trophy case, and it won't win you tough football games. Not to say I wouldn't love to have Rodgers in NY but I don't think he's justified his reputation. If you ask a Packer fan he's already the greatest of all time even though he's only had one great season that went down in flames in the play offs.

He's what I would call a great quarterback. If he wins another ring and repeats last years performance season after season I'll be ready to call him elite in like 2015,

Here is where I group the QB's in no particular order.

Elite:

Manning A
Manning B
Brady
Brees
Rodgers
Roethlisberger

Tier A:

Matt Schaub
Matt Ryan
Philip Rivers
Tony Romo

Tier B:

Alex Smith
Matthew Stafford
Jay Cutler
Joe Flacco
Michael Vick

Tier Cellar: (Will never be good, or is past their prime)

Kevin Kolb
Brady Quinn
Tim Hasselbeck
Carson Palmer
Mark Sanchez

I will leave a space here for Josh Freeman. He is leaning towards ending up in the cellar.

The rest of the QB's are either rookies, or 1st or 2nd year starters who have not proven themselves as of yet.

Starts and ends with JaMarcus Russell. None better. But, I predict, he will be even more accomplished once he's completed training/conditioning for his NFL comeback.

Thanks guys. I would not put Roth in that category but I agree that both Mannings and Brady are top tier. I also agree that the media uses Elite way too much.

But do you think he will be more successful than Dan McGuire ?

I like grouping QBs into tiers because I think you can really split hairs with numerical rankings. If we're talking, "Pick me a QB to lead you to a SB this year," this is how I'd tier things:

(Again, in each tier there is no specific order)

Top Tier
Rodgers
Brady
Brees

Tier Two
Roethlisberger
Eli Manning
Peyton Manning

Tier Three
Stafford
Ryan

Tier Four
Flacco
Schaub
Rivers
RGIII (no, I'm not even f**king kidding)
Cam

Tier Five
Vick
Cutler
Romo

Tier Six
Luck
Alex Smith

After this, I can't picture anyone else winning a Super Bowl, so...IT. DOESN'T. MATTER. But the next tier would be Ponder, Palmer, and Dalton.

Rodgers from Greenbay? You mean the one in those insurance commercials?

We know what Eli thinks, anyway.
