A-Rod to miss first half of '13

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/stor...-season-source

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Alex Rodriguez is expected to miss most of the first half of the 2013 because of a second hip surgery, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

The surgery will be on Rodriguez's left hip. After pre-rehabilitation, he will have the surgery in January and then it will take four-to-six months for the New York Yankees' third baseman recover. In 2009, Rodriguez, who will be 38 during next season, had his right hip repaired.

During the playoffs, Rodriguez originally complained of his hip bothering him, a source said. After the infamous ALCS Game 1, when Rodriguez annoyed Yankee officials by flirting with a girl in the stands during the loss, Rodriguez went to the hospital following that game to have an MRI on his right hip. It checked out fine.

During a recent checkup with Dr. Marc Philippon, the surgeon who performed the original procedure on his torn labrum, the new injury in his left hip was discovered.

The surgery is not expected to be career threatening, but it could help to explain Rodriguez's 0-for-18 with 12 strikeout performance in the playoffs. Rodriguez ended up being benched.

The New York Post had earlier reported the likelihood that Rodriguez needed surgery.

The first hip injury was diagnosed shortly after he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs earlier in his career. He finished off that season with an epic October and his first World Series ring.

Rodriguez finished the 2012 season with a .272 average, 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 122 games. His OPS was .783, which was the lowest since his first full season back in 1995.

The Yankees will likely look to add some insurance for the left side of the infield. Shortstop Derek Jeter is expected to be limited in spring training due to his fractured ankle, as well. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said that Jeter should be ready for Opening Day.

Cashman's priority so far this offseason has been getting his pitching staff in order. The infield will likely quickly become a focus. On the current roster, Jayson Nix and Eduardo Nunez are possibilities to play on the left side.

Rodriguez is owed $114 million on his current contract through 2017, excluding potential milestone home run bonuses.

Worst contract ever. Ever

Try and get the Padres to deal Chase Headley.

Why would he wait until January for surgery?

It's ARod.

The article tells us he also had his right hip checked but later found out it was actually a new injury on the left.

So he felt nothing on the left side? If no pain, how is this a possible explanation for his suckitude?

Source: A-Rod re-injury occurred before playoffs. Was on pain medication throughout #Yankees' post-season. Pain so severe after one of DS games, he had to be taken to emergency room and spent night there.

On the juice, he either becomes a good player again or he gets suspended.

Win-win for the Yanks.

If you can bang out some targeted work around the affected hip/leg pre-op, it makes the post op recovery a lot easier/faster. Or so Ive heard.

Left side of Yankees infield has issues. Over $40 million committed to an overweight 40 year old shortstop with a bum ankle and a 3B with two bum hips. Guess the bonus money for HR #763 is safe.

I know Brian Cashman isn't the best GM, but Randy Levine should NEVER EVER make any roster decisions. Cashman did not want to bring back A-Rod after he opted out, A-Rod went to Levine and Hal/Hank Steinbrenner and got that insane contract. That deal is going to be a a millstone around our neck for the next half decade, especially with our new $189 payroll limit.

I've never been an A-Rod hater, I think we all should appreciate just how good he was, but I'm just sick of hearing and reading about this guy. I just want to be done with him already. We really need a few of these position players in the minors (Mason Williams, Slade Heathcott, Tyler Austin, and Gary Sanchez) to pan out. Desperately need a new wave.

I wouldn't be surprised if this injury is a result/side effect of previous years of juicing.
