Newly acquired NY Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard tweets anti-gay slur

Newly acquired NY Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard tweets anti-gay slur
Syndergaard, 20, was acquired along with catcher Travis d'Arnaud in the deal that sent the Cy Young Award winner to the Blue Jays
By Andy Martino / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Righthanded pitcher Noah Syndergaard, 20, acquired along with catcher Travis d'Arnaud in the deal that sent the Cy Young Award winner to the Blue Jays, tweets from the account @Noahsyndergaard.

On Dec. 9, this tweet appeared from that account: "@DMarze89 nice crocs f-- lol"

The tweet no longer appears on the timeline for the account.

A Mets spokesman said that the team was looking into the matter. The full context of the tweet was not immediately clear; Syndergaard might be available on a conference call introducing him and d'Arnaud on Tuesday.

Syndergaard was a key piece in the Dickey trade, and was rated Toronto's top pitching prospect by Baseball America.

So a 20 yr old kid called his buddy a f--? Oh the humanity!

He screwed up putting that on Twitter, and in the press conference yesterday, addressed it and handled it pretty well, admitting his error.

Entire Jets fan sites have been founded on calling each other f--s.

A complete non-story. This young man gets it. Age 20 and opening with his statement, he is mature beyond his years. The anti-Aroid.

Brother Green's Mets obsession continues. But I do acknowledge that you had Youkilis going to the Yankees.

New Mets pitcher Syndergaard apologizes for anti-gay slur
By DON BURKE
Noah Syndergaard headed off any questions at the pass.

Asked to make an opening comment before answering any queries yesterday on the conference call in which he and catchers Travis d’Arnaud and John Buck were all introduced as the newest members of the Mets, the 20-year-old pitcher immediately apologized for an anti-gay remark he made on Twitter last week, calling it “a poor attempt at humor.”

Using the Twitter account @Noahsyndergaard, Syndergaard sent the following message on Dec. 9 to the Twitter account of fellow minor leaguer Dayton Marze: “@DMarze89 nice crocs f-- lol.”

Syndergaard, acquired on Monday along with d’Arnaud, Buck and minor league outfielder Wuilmer Becerra in the trade that sent NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas to the Blue Jays, said he was just kidding with a friend.

“I had a mishap on Twitter that was brought to my attention this morning,” Syndergaard said. “I apologize for anything that was said. My buddy and I were having some fun and it was a poor attempt at humor.

“I’m sorry for what I said. I hope I didn’t offend anyone. I’m also sorry my first introduction as a New York Met had to be like this.’’

The right-handed pitcher was the No. 3 rated prospect in the Blue Jays’ farm system last season, when he was 8-5 with a 2.60 ERA for Class A Lansing. He had 122 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings.

Last season a member of the Blue Jays major league club, shortstop Yunel Escobar, wrote an anti-gay slur on his eye black for a game against the Red Sox, and has since been traded — twice.

Watch the episode on Arliss on gay guys in baseball. It was pretty right on. Baseball is still an old boys club where that sort of thing is very frowned on. Billy Beane explains it best in his book. He had a family just to keep his image up and hide the fact he was gay from his team.
